World Cup Update [1]

The Group Stage of the World Cup ended today. Now comes the fun part.

Of the 48 starting teams, the 12 first place teams (including the US), the 12 second place teams and the 8 best third place teams move to the knockout stage, and are paired up initially in 16 elimination matches. No more ties allowed. After 90 minutes of regulation time, if there’s a tie, a 30 minute overtime period is added, and if there’s still a time, the teams move to the infamous penalty kicks (best of 5 per team).

The winning 16 teams move on to 8 matches, then 4 and then the final on July 19.

The US team (2 wins, 1 loss, 8 goals) is matched up against Bosnia & Herzegovina (one of the third place teams with a record of 1 win, 1 loss, 1 draw, 5 goals). If they win, they likely advance to play Spain, considered one of the four best teams in the world.

Among the interesting matches to look forward to, Cabo Verde, a tiny nation in the Atlantic Ocean. kicked off the competition by tying Spain, and finished second in its group. They play Argentina, one of the other best teams. And Iran, in the midst of a war with the United States, also finished second and will face Switzerland (it is next to impossible for them to end up playing the US).
