Another Saturday Night – Interpolations and Sampling [1]

['Ammo Hauler', 'Meteor Blades', 'Crimson Quillfeather', 'Chloris Creator']

Date: 2026-06-27

If a certain song sounds somehow familiar, it’s because the writer purposely or unconsciously referenced an earlier work to render their own musical composition using the rhythm or melody of that earlier work.

Or they intentionally developed the song using elements from a song, usually with the permission of that song’s publisher.

Sometimes, the songwriter does indeed compose a song with musical similarities completely unaware that another artist has published or recorded an earlier work that sometimes is uncannily similar. Infringement lawsuits often challenge the later work.

Sampling either takes an earlier song’s trademark melody and weaves a story around that. Tupac’s Changes most recognizably used Bruce Hornsby’s The Way It Is and both were highly successful in their own genres.

Interpolation does not borrow or sample portions of recorded works but takes recognizable melodies and or lyrics in the composition of a new work. Frank Ocean’s White Ferrari utilizes melodic elements of the Beatles Here There and Everywhere.

Infringement suits arise even when an offending artist as prominent as George Harrison releases a highly success ful song like My Sweet Love. The publishing company with the rights to He’s So Fine, written by Ronnie Mack, sued George Harrison and won a judgement which they passed on to Mack’s family.

Show us your favorite reincarnation of your other earlier favorite song. Or both.

Songs that incorporated elements from classical works now in the public domain are also fair game.

Please remember to mention the song and players in the beginning of your comment – it makes it easier for those of us using our phone browsers and even for the computer users since we can’t see the video until we open the link.

You know how this works — Put your quarter in the slot and your song in the comments. This is your Saturday night jukebox and the party starts NOW~!

Upcoming diarists – let us know if you’re interested in a future date.
