Kitchen Table Kibitzing: Nostalgia [1] ['Dan K', 'A Pagan In Arizona', 'Meteor Blades'] Date: 2026-06-25 Nostalgia is a bittersweet emotional state characterized by a sentimental longing or wistful affection for the past . It combines the joy of fond memories with a painful awareness that those moments are gone. Psychologists view this complex emotion as a psychological resource that helps us cope with present-day stressors, build personal identity, and foster social connection. from AI Google. Ah, times gone by. It seems like so much longer than just one week ago since the Obama Center opened. I watched the entire event and gotta say it was just so unbelievably inspiring. Yet it still left me with the feeling of having an open wound with no means to close it. The former president is telling us in essence that we have the possibility to write our future, but I can’t for the life of me figure out what tools to use. This feeling of powerlessness is all the more in evidence this week as I read the new book Regime Change. It lacks the jaw-dropping element which was synonymous with most all of the books written about his first term because it’s not revealing anything that we aren’t already aware of. I’m only half way through and despite being so grief struck by what’s happening to our country, I’m still in disbelief at what they’ve done in less than two years. Reading about DOGE and the policy behind immigration and deportation remains as shocking as it was when the policies were first rolled out. Nostalgia Musings… Now that pennies are not being minted, what are you going to do with all of your coins? So many things are near obsolete. Landline phones, paper maps, phone books, alarm clocks, fax machines, and film cameras are just a sampling of things that were part of our lives for so many years. How many of these do you use today? What are the things you miss most? And here’s another one. Food. Since eating out has gotten so expensive it’s been a long time since I’ve gone out for a meal. The other day in a support group I belong to the moderator read us snippets of an article about employing cooking as a means of coping with anxiety. This lead to the question of what everyone’s favorite meal was. I had to think for some time but finally realized what I miss the most is the breakfast I used to order at the neighborhood greasy spoon. I haven’t eaten an omlette there since the egg shortage last year sent prices skyrocketing, but I realized that a big breakfast is what I would want. A cheese and spinach omlette, one buckwheat pancake, and a latte. Sheer bliss. What’s your favorite meal?
