Sunday Morning Open Thread with Music by the Foo Fighters [1] ['Ice Blue', 'Sabrina Haake', 'Chitown Kev'] Date: 2026-06-14 Good morning, everyone. We’re in for a pleasant Sunday, that is, unless you like hot and muggy weather. We’re going to be lucky if we reach 70 degrees. I’m going to enjoy it while it lasts. For this agreeable day, how about a few selections from the Foo Fighters? But first, Morning Open Thread is a daily, copyrighted post from a host of editors and guest writers. We support our community, invite and share ideas, and encourage thoughtful, respectful dialogue in an open forum. Join us, please. For years I thought the Foo Fighters was a spinoff of the grunge band Nirvana after Kurt Cobain committed suicide. I am ashamed to admit that I just learned that Nirvana was the baby of drummer Dave Grohl all along. While Grohl wrote quite a library of songs himself, he was “in awe” of the ones written by Cobain. While Nirvana was still together, Grohl booked a studio and recorded all the tracks to his own work himself and released them under a pseudonym. Nirvana officially disbanded after the death of Cobain in 1994. After that, Grohl got offers from numerous other artists in search of a drummer. He nearly took the position of drummer with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Instead, he decided to record his own music. In October of that year, he recorded 15 of his own songs, all but one of them alone. He recorded an entire album’s worth of music in five days and handed out copies to friends. At first, he wanted to remain anonymous so he eventually released the recordings under the name The Foo Fighters, which is the old WWII name for UFOs. He also hoped the name would lead listeners to think the album was a collaboration. Grohl later said, “Had I actually considered this to be a career, I probably would have called it something else, because it’s the stupidest fucking band name in the world.” But the demo tape he made its rounds in the record industry and the name stuck. With that, Grohl had to come up with a new band. He chose Nate Mendel on bass, William Goldsmith on drums and Pat Smear on second guitar. Goldsmith left the band in 1996 after Grohl replaced his drum tracks on a new album with his own work. Taylor Hawkins was chosen as Goldsmith’s replacement. Hawkins stayed with the band until his death in 2022. The Foo Fighters’ style has been described as grunge, alternative rock, and several other genres. They have been a steady workhorse since their formation in 1994. They are slated to appear this October 3rd with Bruce Springsteen, Tom Morello, the Dropkick Murphys and others at the Power to the People Festival in Columbia MD. The concert is in response to the presidency of Donald Trump. We’re always looking for new diarists whether to assume weekly duties or for a one shot deal. Contact either officebss or Ozarkblue if you’re interested. Now on with the tunes. So what’s on your mind this morning?
