Sunday Morning Open Thread with Some One Hit Wonders from ’75 [1] ['Ice Blue', 'Greg Dworkin', 'Chloris Creator'] Date: 2026-06-07 Good morning, everyone. Were you around in 1975? Were you old enough to be listening to popular music? Even if you weren’t, you’ve probably heard these songs. But first off, Morning Open Thread is a daily, copyrighted post from a host of editors and guest writers. We support our community, invite and share ideas, and encourage thoughtful, respectful dialogue in an open forum. Join us, please. I remember most of these songs from the roller skating rink my parents let me go to on Saturday afternoon when I was 12 years old. Actually, I think they let me go just to get me out of their hair. We lived in a tiny suburban town just south of Asheville, NC. It was beautiful country but, frankly, there wasn’t much to do for a pre-teen. That’s why the high point of my week came when I had the chance to roll around in circles with friends at Skatetown. If it sounds like a lame existence, it was. The only thing that perked the day up a little was the disco ball and the music. It wasn’t all Bee Gees and Donna Summer. Most of this morning’s featured songs bring back that era for me. I don’t remember Minnie Riperton’s song being played much at Skatetown. You may groan at the thought of listening to her piece but did you know she had a five octave vocal range? Most people only have range of one. Also, she came up with most of the lyrics to that song when she was singing to her and her husband’s newborn child. Her husband, who was a record producer, heard her singing it to their baby, tweaked the lyrics a bit, and she had a hit record. I certainly didn’t hear any Phoebe Snow being played at the roller rink. I always thought of her as more of, well, a poet than a rock artist. Frankly, I was surprised to hear she counted as a one-hit wonder. I know she had a devoted fan base who kept her LPs selling. Though her “Poetry Man” was often played on mainstream rock radio stations it had enough jazz influences to keep it off the ’70s dance floors. That song won her the 1975 Grammy Award for Best New Artist. Afterwards, Snow kept quite busy doing commercial jingles or working as an opening act for other musicians. We’re always looking for new diarists whether to assume weekly duties or for a one shot deal. Contact either officebss or Ozarkblue if you’re interested. Now on with the tunes. So what’s on your mind this morning?
