What is the Democrats’ Secret Weapon? [1]

Candidates all over the country are running in the reddest of red districts in the Run Everywhere project.

Following the lead of North Carolina, Texas, Maryland, Virginia and others, 140 Blue Florida and 90 for 90 are recruiting candidates to run in every state legislative district in Florida. They have brought the number of uncontested seats down from 58 to 6, so far.

This is a grassroots effort. The DNC and the FL Democratic party have not given a cent to these courageous candidates. Unfortunately there is an $1,800 fee to run, which must be paid by June 12, 2026, which makes a total of about $60,000 we have to raise before that date.

The Secret Weapon is the votes these candidates add to the statewide races. The Tropic Press reminds us that in Florida in 2000, Democrats failed to run a candidate in 7 Congressional elections and 28 State legislative elections, while Gore “lost” by 537 votes:

Theoretically, Gore might have won in 2000 if Democrats had simply fielded candidates in those unopposed races. It would have been enough even if the difference was only one additional vote for every 10 precincts in the state (there are about 5,600 precincts statewide).

Today’s FL Democrats have not learned this lesson.

They have not contributed a cent to any of the 140 Blue candidates.

There are five statewide primary statewide offices in FL: Governor, Lt. Governor, Attorney General, and Chief Financial Officer and Commissioner of Agriculture. As of about a week ago, Democrats had no candidate for Chief Financial Officer. When Stephanie Leonard, who had been running for HD 6, learned about this, she decided to run for the statewide office.

Then after a few days, she withdrew from that office, apparently under pressure from the state party, and now is running for HD-6 again.

We will see if Dems run another CFO candidate. If they don’t, shame on them. If they do, Stephanie will again step up to the plate.
