Republican won’t ‘pass judgment’ on Trump’s corruption [1] ['Walter Einenkel'] Date: 2026-05-22 Republican Rep. Tom Emmer of Minnesota went on CNBC to defend President Donald Trump’s settlement with the IRS that would produce a nearly $1.8 billion slush fund to pay reparations to those against whom the government was supposedly “weaponized,” such as the insurrectionists who stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. “So we’re all clear, you support the settlement that the president made with—some people would say he made with himself?” co-host Andrew Sorkin asked. “You feel like that was totally on the up and up?” After trying to elide the question, Emmer eventually answered, “I suspect that whatever agreement was made, it’s fair on both sides of the agreement. But I wasn’t in the room, so I don’t pass judgment.” Emmer might not “pass judgement” on one of the most blatant bits of corruption to come out of the Trump administration, but when co-host Joe Kernen asked about the president’s deteriorating poll numbers, Emmer dismissed them as “nonsense polls.” He then noted that Trump’s endorsement still carries weight in Republican primaries. “Donald Trump still holds the strength that he has held throughout his years now of growth in this position,” Emmer said. “There’s never been anybody like him.” If a journalist with any integrity had followed up, they might have asked: If this is true, why are Republicans so hell-bent on gerrymandering democracy into oblivion? “There’s not going to be anybody like him anytime soon in the future,” Emmer added. Is that a promise?
