Action Party https://www.eventbrite.com/e/talking-climate-in-the-age-of-disinformation-action-party-tickets-1986927323110 The Good News Desalination Is Having a Moment As drought conditions intensify globally and the Iran War turns the Middle East’s desalination infrastructure into military targets, attention has increasingly focused on both the criticality and vulnerability of desalination infrastructure. A cohort of startups is now attempting to build more resilient — and ideally lower-cost — systems, as potential customers from Cairo to California look on with interest. — Katie The need for desalination has long been clear in water-scarce regions of the planet. But with roughly a quarter of the global population now facing extreme water stress and drought conditions only projected to intensify, the technology is becoming an increasingly necessary tool for survival in a wider array of geographies. Power Magazine e-mail: The Power Problem Behind AI—and a Path to Fix It Artificial intelligence (AI) training data centers create massive, unpredictable power swings that can destabilize the grid—making straightforward utility connections impractical for now. This article examines how battery energy storage, microgrid control, and unified supervisory automation are helping data center operators stabilize loads and prepare for eventual grid connection. Data Centers and the Grid: How Hyperscale Computing Is Reshaping Power Infrastructure Hyperscale data centers now consume power on par with mid-size cities, and the grid is struggling to keep up. This article breaks down the technical, logistical, and supply chain challenges utilities and developers face—and explores behind-the-meter solutions that could help close the gap. How to Reduce Energy Consumption with Improved Data Center Cooling Efficiency As artificial intelligence workloads drive data center power demands to unprecedented levels, cooling efficiency has become a critical operational and financial priority. This article examines how advanced liquid cooling instrumentation is helping hyperscalers improve uptime, cut energy costs, and meet sustainability targets. AI Data Center Growth Is Now a Power Infrastructure Problem Power availability—not processors or latency—has become the defining constraint in the artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure race. This article explores how firm generation, smart siting, grid coordination, and power-efficient design are now as critical to the future of AI as the chips themselves. Bloomberg Green Daily e-mail: Batteries for days Accelerating demand for long-lasting energy storage offers a rare opportunity for US and European clean technology companies to compete with China’s globally dominant battery sector. Installations of long-duration systems — an umbrella term for so-called super-batteries that can store and deliver electricity for many hours or even days — are surging as the world looks to better harness renewable energy. Deployments are forecast to about quadruple this year after a record 2025, according to BloombergNEF. While China currently accounts for about 72% of cumulative long-duration storage capacity — including almost all installations last year — the US is the second-largest market and expected to ramp up deployments later this decade, as are nations including Germany, India and Japan, BNEF said last month. US installations could be accelerated further as the boom in data center construction adds fresh demand for reliable power. “China leads in scale,” said Yiyi Zhou, a BNEF analyst specializing in energy storage. “The US has the most diversified type of technology in development.” Bloomberg Green Daily e-mail: How Brazil curbed global deforestation Here’s some good news for a change. In 2025 tropical deforestation fell by more than a third after reaching record levels the previous year. Experts welcomed the data with hope — and caution. Tropical forest loss is still 46% higher than ten years ago. Today’s newsletter looks at how Brazil’s 2023 anti-deforestation plan is starting to bear fruit. Brazil, which encompasses two-thirds of the Amazon, the world’s largest rainforest, recorded the largest absolute area of primary forest loss. But it cut that loss by 42% from the previous year. The report attributes the decline to stronger environmental policy and enforcement under President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The improvement stands in stark contrast to 2024, when Brazil’s Amazon suffered its worst drought on record, fueling unprecedented forest fires. André Lima, Brazil’s secretary for deforestation control, said in a phone interview that the country’s forest policy rests on “two agendas that are intertwined” — curbing deforestation and controlling fires. He said the government relaunched the federal anti-deforestation plan in 2023 under Lula and is now beginning to see results. Citing Brazil’s official data, Lima said Amazon deforestation fell 50% in 2025 compared with 2022. Bloomberg Green Daily e-mail: Global EV buying spree The war in Iran and the turmoil it has set off in global oil markets is fueling a surge in electric car sales in much of the world. In March, the first four weeks since the bombing began, consumers in France, Germany and the UK drove off in 206,200 EVs, a 44% increase over the year-earlier period. In South Korea, electric car transactions more than doubled. In Italy, where the path to electrification has been slow, 16,000 battery-powered vehicles left dealerships last month, a 67% increase. “The March data suggest that scaling up to electrification can occur at a meaningful pace when market and policy conditions align,” said Peter Mock, Europe director at the International Council on Clean Transportation. “The coincidence with the recent oil price shock is notable.” The EV gains came despite flagging sales in the world’s largest auto markets. While electric car transactions last month cooled in Canada, China and the US, a surge in demand in Europe, Australia and parts of Asia more than compensated for the declines. Here are some highlights from the European State of the Climate report released today by the Earth observation agency Copernicus. At least 95% of Europe saw above-average annual temperatures in 2025 Europe experienced the highest sea-surface temperature on record Snow cover was 31% below average across Europe Wildfires burnt over 1 million hectares, the largest area on record Extreme rainfall and flooding were less widespread than in recent years Bloomberg Green Daily e-mail: India’s extreme heat crisis India is among the most vulnerable countries on a warming planet. By one measure, the nation is home to all 50 of the world’s hottest cities. Dangerous heat India is preparing for a blistering summer until monsoon rains arrive in June, with above-normal heat already straining power grids at a time when the country is grappling with energy shortages. Heat waves are forecast to persist for longer than usual in densely populated states of western and eastern India, the country’s weather forecaster said on Friday. Areas like Gujarat, Maharashtra and parts of the foothills of the Himalayas will see more days of unusually high temperatures in May — typically the peak of the pre-monsoon summer. It’s indicative of how the intensity of the angst over big tech infrastructure is surging past current and historic malaise against wind. U.S. Representative Harriet Hageman (R-WY) introduced the Stop Climate Shakedowns Act of 2026 to protect American energy from leftist legal crusades punishing lawful activity. https://hageman.house.gov/media/press-releases/rep-hageman-introduces-bill-shield-american-energy-producers-leftist-climate The shale revolution unlocked the United States as the world’s leading producer of crude oil and natural gas. U.S. energy dominance has since reinforced America’s diplomatic leverage while driving the domestic economy with the affordable, reliable power that keeps factories, farms, and hospitals operating. States passing so-called “climate superfund” laws, along with climate liability lawsuits, however, threaten to undermine American energy dominance by litigating producers out of business. State legislatures and environmental extremists are trying to scapegoat the same producers who keep America running with fines and lawsuits over legal production in the past, lawful activity in the present, and imagined transgressions in the future. The Stop Climate Shakedowns Act of 2026 shields America’s energy producers from these relentless attacks, supporting our affordable energy sector, preserving American jobs, and restoring clarity to our nation’s energy policy. 🚨PANIC💲 ALERT🚨TRUMP IS WACKO😵‍💫ON WIND"Wind developers have faced repeated disruptions from The Pentagon & their applications are no longer being processed.TRUMP SAYS wind turbines are ugly, expensive & inefficient."
