Late Nighter Roundup-Wednesday, April 29th, 2026 [1] ['View Profile', 'Greg Dworkin', 'Chloris Creator', 'Meteor Blades'] Date: 2026-04-29 I typically only post embedded links to the Late Night content in these diaries. But these articles came across my screen and are so on topic that I couldn’t ignore them, so here they are. I’ve done literally hundreds of news diaries over the last couple of years, so it isn’t too difficult for me to shift gears. The embedded videos are below. This link worked for me without a paywall. YMMV. NYT Stephen Colbert Gets Ready to Hang It Up Each episode of “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” over the past few weeks has offered a fresh reminder that the final one is rapidly approaching. Oprah Winfrey swung by to tell Mr. Colbert that she needed to “say goodbye.” Jake Tapper came armed with a farewell gift. Billy Crystal sang him a song. The audience ovations are getting louder and louder. “The feelings of the show ending are growing significantly now,” Mr. Colbert said. Mr. Colbert’s observation was part of wide-ranging interview last week in his office above the Ed Sullivan Theater on Broadway. Appearing both relaxed (he was barefoot) but also a bit restless (he occasionally fidgeted with an old-school football helmet), he reflected on the coming end of “The Late Show” on May 21, as well as his two-decade career as a late-night host. He also spoke about how his show had become so topical, President Trump and what he might do next. He could be, as he put it, “long-winded” at times. Indeed. For one question, he gave an answer that lasted, with limited interruption, for 18 minutes. ✂️ There’s a moderately long interview after that. It’s worth a read. NPR FCC orders early license renewal for ABC stations following Kimmel’s first lady joke The Federal Communications Commission has ordered The Walt Disney Company’s ABC to seek early broadcast license renewals for the eight TV stations it owns. The move follows criticism from first lady Melania Trump who objected to a joke about her made by late night comedian Jimmy Kimmel. President Trump followed up with a social media post calling for Kimmel to be fired. As the early license renewal order went out, FCC Chair Brendan Carr criticized ABC’s parent company, Disney. Speaking on a podcast hosted by Katie Miller — whose husband is White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller — Carr said there are multiple ways the FCC can handle broadcast licenses. ✂️ Governmental overreach, exhibit A. The Guardian Jon Stewart on White House correspondents’ dinner: ‘We can’t even pull off a dinner that shouldn’t have existed in the first place’ Late-night hosts responded to the White House correspondents’ dinner shooting and Donald and Melania Trump’s attempts to blame political violence on Jimmy Kimmel’s jokes. Jon Stewart resumed his Monday night chair at the Daily Show less than two days after the shocking attack at the White House correspondents’ dinner on Saturday night, which resulted in the arrest of one man and, thankfully, no injuries. “It was supposed to be an evening of fun and merriment until, like most things in America, it was interrupted by gunfire,” Stewart said. “This is why we can’t have nice things. And to be perfectly frank, it’s not even a nice thing. Nobody wanted this fucking dinner in the first place! ✂️ “How fucked up is that scene?” Stewart wondered, even comparing it to footage of the hardline anti-immigrant Trump adviser, Stephen Miller, escorting his pregnant wife out of the room. “The guy who outshined you is Stephen fucking Miller,” Stewart marveled. “That’s who was more chivalrous. Stephen Miller, a guy who probably jerks off to the new Faces of Death movie. And now for the rest of your life, for the rest of your life, your wife is gonna ask you a question no one’s ever asked before, ever: ‘Why can’t you be more like Stephen Miller?’” ✂️ There’s a lot more in the article, but I had the actual clips in yesterday’s Late Nighter Roundup. Feel free to go back if you are so inclined. The interview with Jodi Kantor was fantastic! Late Nighters Seth Meyers: Stephen Colbert appears to be off this week. His last show is 5/21. Jimmy Kimmel: Jimmy Fallon: The Daily Show: Since I’m shy on material, here are a couple of bonuses from The Daily Show This content has not been previewed. Watch it at your own risk. I’ll reply in the comments if anything worthy comes up.
