First Amendment Threat [1]

So on Monday, Karoline Leavitt came back from maternity leave which she just started last Friday, to provide the administration’s thoughts on the first amendment. A little after one pm in the afternoon, she stood in the press room of the White House and told the assembled journalists there that speaking poorly of the President and the administration was dangerous and potentially criminal. Criticism, it seems, is no longer allowed. She made the claim that democrats are to blame. You may recall my last post saying just that. She posited that calling the President a facist, a Hitler, and other names was the key to the political violence now consuming our country.

There was no recitation of rhetoric the President himself has used. Or statements and name calling members of his administration have used. Instead, she read out a list of Democrats and statements they’ve made taken out of context. We all know that the most radical of the President’s base will use Leavitt’s statements yesterday and take the list she read off, and do what they always do, attack those who criticize the Dear Leader.

I will point out that criticising our leaders is a time-honored tradition. You don’t think the patriots of 1776 were shy about commenting about King George’s habits, appearance, or proclamations do you? Of course not. Nor has any pundit since George Washington held back when they thought the administration in power was going off track. Every newspaper in the country from our very beginning has had an opinion page with letters to the editor and politcal cartoons.

This administration is so thin-skinned that the least little comment throws them into a frothing fit. Especially when the commentary is accurate. I had a good chuckle the other day about Hegseth’s and Patel’s “Liquor Cabinet”. Ouch, did that sting? Too bad. I spent 20 years in the Air Force protecting the Constitution of the United States. No where in that document does it say you can’t say mean things about the administration. On the contrary, Article One is quite specific. “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof: or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press: or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”

So here I am, the next day, criticizing the administration. On May 1st, I, along with perhaps millions of people, will be on the streets supporting May Day: Workers Over Billionaires. I will not shut up. I will Show Up, Stand Up, and Speak Up. I will continue to do so until this corrupt, greedy, loser of an administration is voted out of office, arrested for their crimes, and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
