Democratic “Field General” U.S. Representative Suzan DelBene [1] ['Blue Choir Singer', 'View Profile', 'Sabrina Haake', 'Chitown Kev'] Date: 2026-04-26 U.S. Representative Suzan DelBene– Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries’ “Field General” in the Successful Virginia Democratic Redistricting Battle April 26, 2026 JFK once noted that success, in political and diplomatic actions, has many “fathers,” and frankly, IMHO, “mothers” as well. After House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) successfully engineered the Democratic triumph in the April 21, 2026 Virginia referendum that could net “Team Blue” 4 previous GOP congressional seats and a 10-1 Democratic advantage in the Old Dominion, he rightfully received praise from former master tactician House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and many political analysts and pundits. He was correctly credited with matching the Trump administration stride for stride in strategy and rhetoric. Jeffries himself aptly noted, “Donald Trump and Republicans launched this gerrymandering war, and we’ve made it clear as Democrats that we’re going to finish it.” https://www.politico.com/news/2026/04/22/hakeem-jeffries-redistricting-virginia-00887871 During an April 22, 2026 morning news conference, Jeffries demonstrated a victorious swagger. He employed language more befitting a battlefield than a Capitol Hill triumph. Surrounded by other top Democratic leaders, he called Democratic Congressional Campaign Chair (DCCC), Washington State’s Suzan DelBene, a “field general.” Rep. Jeffries warned GOPers in Florida that if they embark on their own redistricting scheme, they will “F around and find out, FAFO.” https://www.politico.com/news/2026/04/22/hakeem-jeffries-redistricting-virginia-00887871 Now it’s time to meet Jeffries’ “field general” Suzan DelBene. Eighth full term Democratic Representative Suzan Kay DelBene (64) currently represents Washington State’s 1st Congressional District (CD). The Evergreen State 1st is centered in the Seattle and the Everett suburbs. It takes in most of Redmond, the home of Microsoft, WA’s third largest employer. Redmond has gone from a city of 1,426 people in 1960 to over 80,000 in 2023. Redmond is now 39% Asian. https://thealmanacofamericanpolitics.com, 2026, National Journal, 2024, p.1860 The WA 1st also includes most of the other King County suburbs east of Lake Washington and north of Seattle. Technology constitutes the1st’s economic driver. In addition to Microsoft, Redmond is home to Nintendo’s North American operations and research facilities for Facebook and Amazon. Google maintains its research and development center which developed Google Maps in neighboring Kirkland. Bellevue is the fastest growing neighborhood in Seattle and has many large business and residential projects. The WA 1st extends north above the lake as far as Arlington, and takes in most of the heavily suburbanized areas of western Snohomish County, now home to three out of five of the 1st’s residents. https://thealmanacofamericanpolitics.com, 2026, National Journal, 2024, p. 1860 Politically, the WA 1st is the Evergreen’s State third most-most Democratic district. Kamala Harris carried it in 2024 by 29 points. https://thealmanacofamericanpolitics.com, 2026, National Journal, 2024, p. 1861 A native of Selma, Alabama, DelBene’s parents divorced when she was a toddler. She lived with her mother who later married an often unemployed airline pilot. Her family moved often, including to Iran, while she attended on scholarship the Choate Rosemary Hall prep school (JFK’s boarding school) in Connecticut. She majored in biology at Reed College in Oregon hoping to become a veterinarian, but shifted her career interests to biotechnology and got a job at a Seattle biotechnology firm. After earning a 1983 University of Washington M.B.A., Microsoft hired her. After 12 years at Microsoft, she became Vice President of that firm’s mobile communications business. She married Kurt DelBene, who had held several senior Microsoft executive posts. Her husband took a break from his Microsoft employment to help repair the government website for Obamacare which had initially crashed when it opened. https://thealmanacofamericanpolitics.com, 2026, National Journal, 2024, p. 1859 Ms.DelBene left Microsoft in 1998 and joined two high-tech start ups.She later worked on microfinance with an international non-profit. She stated that that job taught her ways in which policies could create opportunities for families. In 2010, a bad Democratic political year, DelBene unsuccessfully challenged GOP U.S. Rep. Dave Reichert in the east Seattle suburbs, but still gained an impressive 48% of the vote in this “Red-leaning” district. WA Democratic Governor Christine Gregoire appointed DelBene director of the state Department of Revenue. In that position, DelBene helped enact a tax amnesty program that generated $345 million for WA State.https://thealmanacofamericanpolitics.com, 2026, National Journal 2024, p.1859 When Democrat Jay Inslee left his congressional district to run for Gov. of WA in 2012, DelBene ran in a 5-way all-party primary to succeed him. In the run-off against the GOPer who had initially finished first, DelBene beat him by eight points, 54%-46%. She has since coasted to re-election victories and won her 2024 general election with 63% of the vote. With her Microsoft background, DelBene is one of the rare House members who have served as senior executives in a well-known company in their own district.https://thealmanacofamericanpolitics.com,2026, National Journal, 2024, pp. 1858-1859 In her first House term, Rep. DelBene had to deal with two disasters and their aftermath– the collapse of an Interstate 5 bridge in Skagit Valley and a mudslide in rural Oso that killed 43 people. These experiences influenced her to push for a bill creating a federal program to identify landslide risks and improve emergency preparedness in landslide-prone areas, which became law in 2021. In that same year, DelBene also achieved the enactment of an even more ambitious goal, an expansion of the child tax credit. Language to provide working families monthly payments, albeit for just one year, was a major part of President Biden’s $1.9 trillion economic relief package. In 2022, when there was a severe nationwide shortage of infant formula, Rep.DelBene helped to write laws that increased domestic formula production and made prorated formula easier to buy and more affordable. https://thealmanacofamericanpolitics.com, 2026, National Journal, 2024, p. 1859 DelBene, as a onetime chair of the business-oriented New Democratic Coalition, had a centrist line on economic issues, but still took a strong progressive stance on social matters. On the powerful House Ways and Means Committee, Rep. DelBene was more supportive of liberalized trade than many of her fellow Democrats. However, she worked to enhance the tax credit for those who built low-income housing. https://thealmanacofamericanpolitics.com, 2026, National Journal, 2024, p. 1859 In the 2022 election cycle, DelBene lost a vote to head the DCCC. After that election, she led an effort to change the caucus rules to give the party leader power to name the person in charge of the campaign operation. Democratic leader Jeffries gave DelBene the DCCC (Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee) post in 2023 for the 2024 campaign, putting her in the party’s leadership. The DCCC, remember, recruits candidates, raises money for them, and provides strategic support for “Team Blue” primary winners. https://thealmanacofamericanpolitics.com, 2026, National Journal, 2024 pp.1858-1859 Although in 2024, the year of Trump’s re-election, Democrats only picked up two seats and were left three short of recapturing the House, Jeffries retained his confidence in DelBene and tapped her to remain as head of the DCCC to “finish the job” (taking back the House), in 2026. After re-appointing DelBene to run the DCCC for the 2026 midterms, she went on GOP Fox News and stated that her party would hold the Republicans “responsible for their votes and actions if they didn’t support working families and use that against them in Campaign 2026.” https://thealmanacofamericanpolitics.com, 2026, National Journal, 2024, pp. 1859-1860 Rep. DelBene is in an excellent position to hold the GOP responsible for its top 1% actions and do-nothing for working families votes. Her position on the House Ways and Means Committee puts her in a top spot where she can work to reshape and rebuff Donald’s reactionary tax cuts and trade policies. As DCCC head, she can repeatedly use her communications ability to hammer the GOP non-stop about their hostility to working families and the American middle class. She showed not only Minority Leader Jeffries, but also, the rest of the American people how she can successfully fight the GOP’s attempts to thwart Democratic moves to add seats in Virginia to their side. She truly was the “field general” who worked non-stop in this “Stop the GOP Gerrymander War.” She will take on Florida and any other state who wants a “Team Red” gerrymander and oppose any other GOP stunts that will hurt Democratic chances. Rep. DelBene is truly an asset to our side and for the American people.
