Still standing! – Tuesday GNR [1] ['View Profile', 'Back Of Bourke'] Date: 2026-04-21 📌 First: A note from our GNR admin, 2thanks: Visitors and New and Returning Members: Welcome to this Good News Roundup! In order to make Daily Kos stronger, faster, and lighter, our intrepid Tech Team has moved DK to a new platform, and now members of Daily Kos must learn how to use it. If you are very new here, we apologize for the hassle and our inevitable errors as we get used to the new editing platform. Those of us in the GNR community who use the site a lot have a lot to learn. Therefore, you will see discussions of many more technical issues this week than we usually put in stories and comments. Gnuville Community Projects We’ve decided to boost these activities: Building Our Group Please support our Roundups in the usual Kosack ways. Join the GNR Discord, which powers our Monday Morning Newsroom. Daily Kos Projects Q & A about our growing pains: DK6 WordPress Trouble Reports, usually hosted by staff member Allison McHenry. Please look for this, our Welcome Section, in every Roundup, since comments do not remain chronologically sorted on our new platform, and a Welcome Comment would no longer cling to the top of the comments. ~ 2thanks ❣️ And now: the Tuesday Roundup! ❣️ ❣️ Good Day, Gnuville! Nifty here. Welcome to your revamped GNR experience! I’ve had a few challenges getting this post up in any kind of recognizable nifty GNR, so bear with me if there are a lot of weird segues and things popping up out of place. Overall, in spite of the learning curve (phew!), I think I am going to like this new platform. It has some features I really like and make sense to me which seem to outweigh the stuff I dislike (which often turn out to be OK, and mainly an operator error problem – like I said, “learning curve- phew!” 😅). One thing I have not yet solved (and hope to before my next GNR) is how to embed music videos. I think the new platform does not yet allow them (Error 153) although I have tried many different ways. I’ll try to figure that out over the next couple of weeks because MUSIC IS LIFE! 🎶 Today is another primary/special election/voting day, notably Virginia (who will be voting on a redistricting measure to counteract Republican gerrymandering in other states). Tonight will be another interesting poll-watching night! If you live in Virginia, tomorrow you have a huge opportunity to make it clear to the GOP that if they want to win, it won’t be by changing the rules and redrawing maps. At least, not without a fight. Vote YES on the redistricting vote, and push back! — Adam Kinzinger (@adamkinzinger.substack.com) 2026-04-20T22:09:43.994Z 🗞️ And now, let’s get right to the news : 😫 Trouble in Trumptown 😩 Never forget that they are the keystone cops of criminality. They are the worst, but they are also the loseriest losers on the planet. Another resignation: Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer resigns, Monica Alba and Garrett Haake, NBC, April 20, 2026. Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer has resigned her post according to two sources with knowledge of the decision, making her the third Cabinet secretary this term to leave the Trump administration.✂️ Chavez-DeRemer had been facing a probe from the department’s inspector general for potential misconduct. That investigation has already resulted in multiple of her top staffers being placed on administrative leave and then ultimately leaving their posts. Panicked Trump, 79, Makes Desperate Move as Devastating Polls Pile Up, Leigh Kimmins, Daily Beast, April 20, 2026. President Donald Trump has begun sharing X polls in a desperate bid to prove his own popularity. A myriad of recent polls suggest that Americans are particularly concerned about the economy, the spiraling war in Iran, and how the president is handling those issues. But not in Trump’s mind. In an attempt to regain control of the narrative, the 79-year-old shared a screengrab on Truth Social detailing a poll from an X account named “America First Now.” The account claims to be based in the U.S., but an advisory notice in its account information section warns that the profile manager may “have used a proxy—such as a VPN” to change the country displayed on their profile. It cites data from a months-old Wall Street Journal poll—then cherry-picks the most flattering numbers, ignoring the bad. In fact, the post completely ignores the WSJ piece’s headline, which was particularly unflattering to Trump. “It’s Trump’s Economy, and Voters Are Unhappy With It,” it read. I’ve said it for years – TFG is his own worst enemy. He will destroy himself, because he cannot help himself. Our job is to make sure he doesn’t destroy everything else along with himself. I know it’s hard knowing that innocent people are being harmed every single day that he and his criminal cabal hold power, but we must persist and win back the power to rebuild. We CAN do this! Trump’s Approval Rating Sinks to Lowest Point of His Second Term, Alex Nguyen, Mother Jones, April 19, 2026. According to the NBC News Decision Desk Poll released on Sunday, only 37 percent of adults approve of Trump’s work as president. Meanwhile, 63 percent disapprove, including 50 percent who disapprove strongly. Some of that strong disapproval comes from Trump’s handling of skyrocketing costs for most households: Among the over 32,000 American adults that NBC News surveyed over two weeks in March and April, 52 percent said they “strongly disapprove” and 16 percent “somewhat disapprove” of Trump’s handling of inflation and the cost of living. That’s a large disapproval jump compared to a few months ago. When NBC News asked the same inflation question to Americans last August, 45 percent noted they “strongly disapprove”—seven percentage points lower than this month’s results. The NBC results also suggest that Trump is beginning to lose his voter base. The number of Republicans who approve of Trump’s performance on inflation sank by 10 percentage points (from 83 to 73 percent) since last summer. The poll also found that overall support for the president dropped by four percentage points (from 87 to 83 percent) among his Republican support in just two months. 🗳️ This next story is about how all of this losing will really make a difference at the state level. The radical right wingers gained this insane amount of power by starting at the local and state level and working up. Now we try to reverse that sickening pattern. And while we are at it, let’s never let that happen again, OK? All politics is local – and the power to affect our own personal lives begins at the local level. Let’s make a pact to VOTE in every local election! Trump’s looming downballot disaster, Russell Payne, Salon, April 20, 2026. Early signals of trouble go beyond just topline approval numbers of the GOP party leader. Dan Patrick, the Republican speaker of the Texas House, said last week that he believed the party would “have a tough time” retaining control of the House there, which they have controlled for more than two decades, with a current advantage of 88 to 62. Democrats have signaled an ambitious push in state legislatures this cycle, with the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee announcing a target map recently naming Alaska, Arizona, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania and New Hampshire as battleground states for control of their state legislatures, alongside 11 other states, where the party says it is working to build towards contesting control of the state legislature. Part of this push is simply the fact that Democrats are making a concerted effort to leave fewer state legislative seats uncontested in the general election. And the committee boasts that it has already flipped some 30 state legislative seats since Trump won re-election in 2024, while Republicans have not flipped any seats. “Things are lining up well for the Democrats’ chances at the state level in November,” Peverill Squire, a professor emeritus at the University of Missouri, told Salon. “If people continue to sour on the Trump administration, it will, of course, hurt the Republican party’s prospects down the ballot.” Rep. Analilia Mejia (D-N.J.) was officially sworn in to represent the Garden State’s 11th Congressional District on Monday, further narrowing the GOP majority in the lower chamber. Mejia, a top aide to Sen. Bernie Sanders’s (I-Vt.) 2020 presidential campaign, defeated Republican Joe Hathaway in a special election last week to succeed New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill (D) in the House. Sherrill, who took office in January, resigned from her seat in November to prepare for her first term as governor.✂️ Now that Mejia is officially in the House, Republicans hold a slim 217-214 majority over Democrats. Independent Rep. Kevin Kiley (Calif.) caucuses with the GOP. That means Johnson can only afford to lose one vote, as his caucus debateswhether to reauthorize Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act and how to fund the Department of Homeland Security. ⬇️ ‼️ 👀 ‼️ ⬇️ Just in: "Rep. PARIS — PARIS (AP) — Elon Musk has been summoned to Paris on Monday, where investigators are looking into allegations of misconduct related to the social media platform X, including the spread of child sexual abuse material and deepfake content. The world’s richest man and Linda Yaccarino — the former CEO of X — have been summoned for “voluntary interviews,” while other employees of the platform are scheduled to be heard as witnesses throughout this week, the Paris prosecutor’s office said. French prosecutors also suspect that controversy around the platform’s AI system Grok’s deepfakes was concocted to boost the value of Musk-owned companies ahead of a key market listing, and alerted U.S. authorities. Musk welcomed a report that U.S. justice officials refused to help French investigators, posting on X, “This needs to stop.” Musk was summoned after a search took place in February at the French premises of X as part of an investigation opened in January 2025 by the cybercrime unit of the Paris prosecutor’s office. Musk and Yaccarino have been invited in their capacities as managers of X at the time of the events investigated. Yaccarino was CEO from May 2023 until July 2025. Monopoly Round-Up: Some Surprising Setbacks for Trump-Aligned Corporate America, Matt Stoller, The Big Newsletter, April 19, 2026. I want to delve into a series of surprising setbacks for the superrich that happened this week. Oligarchs started to lose, not on social questions, but where it pertains to cold hard cash and market power.✂️ But something else happened in the midst of this pro-monopoly statecraft. The public got extremely angry, looking at a world dominated by the Epstein class, and seeing Trump as part of it. Here’s a chart I put up a few months ago, showing how voters experience the world. In his first term, Trump was the third best President for consumer sentiment. This time? It’s the worst ever. So it was just a matter of time before opponents figured out how to push back. This week, they did. And it didn’t come from Congress, but from local officials and voters. 🫏 🔥 States (Mostly Dems) Standing Tall 🔥 🫏 🫏 🔥 Maine Maine Said No to New Data Centers. JB Pritzker, 61, clapped back after President Donald Trump bragged that he would raise tariffs “very soon”—even after his market-crashing levies were declared illegal by the Supreme Court.✂️ “You pay no tariffs if you come here,” the president went on. “If you don’t come here, you pay a lot of tariffs, and we’re raising those tariffs very soon. Not on you, it’s on people from the outside that don’t build their plants here.” But Pritzker reminded Trump there’s a pending matter that Americans have been waiting on him to resolve. “Meanwhile, you still owe Illinoisans $8,679,261,600 from your last round of illegal tariffs,” he wrote in an X post on Friday. “Cut the check, @realdonaldtrump.” CASTEN INTRODUCES PACKAGE OF LEGISLATION TO REFORM AMERICAN DEMOCRACY, Sean Casten D-IL, June 25, 2025. ““The Equal Voices Act will increase the size of the House to be in line with the growing population of the United States. Not only will this bill create smaller districts to allow Members to be more responsive to the needs of their constituents, but it will also rebalance inflated representation between districts and allow for greater diversity that is more representative of our great nation. On top of that, it will grow and equalize the Electoral College, better aligning outcomes with the national popular vote. “Our Founders purposefully constructed the Senate to act as a counter-balance to the will of large, populous states. This may have been effective in their time, but it no longer meets the needs of our country. A government that doesn’t represent the people cannot sustain the support of the people. My amendment establishes 12 at-large senators to be elected through a national popular vote. By creating this bloc of senators, comprising roughly 10% of the body, who are directly responsible to the public will, the Senate will be forced to move its agenda towards the will of the majority. “The current judicial system allows biased parties to game the system, seeking out judges who allow them to further policy objectives instead of blindly seeking justice. This distorts the actual and perceived fairness and independence of the Court and must be remedied. The Constitution gives Congress the power to address the structural concerns of the Supreme Court, and we must do so. It’s time for Congress to restore the Court’s jurisdiction to align with Article III of the Constitution and eliminate the current elements that allow the Court to be gamed for political advantages.” A one-page summary of the legislation can be found here. The legislation – two bills and a constitutional amendment – would: Establish 12 at-large senators to be elected through a national popular vote Add approximately 230 additional Members of the House (if it had been implemented after the 2020 census) Rebalance the power of the Supreme Court by creating a 13-judge multi-circuit panel to hear cases where the United States or a federal agency is a party The emotional trauma inflicted by ICE on our immigrant neighbors is devastating — and often neglected. A top MAGA conspiracy theorist now in the running to become President Donald Trump’s next attorney general just received a setback to her efforts to shore up the president’s debunked claims of rigging at the 2024 polls. “This request is as absurd as it is baseless,” Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel wrote in her rebuke to a Justice Department letter, authored by Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon, demanding ballots and other election materials concerning Trump’s historic loss to Joe Biden. “If this administration wants to bring this circus to our state, my office is prepared to protect the people’s right to vote,” Nessel, a Democrat, added, underscoring her determination to push back against the Trump administration’s efforts to sow doubt over the integrity of U.S. elections ahead of what promises to be a bruising midterms battle. ☀️ To Your Good Health 🥗 Here’s why you should make a habit of having more fun, April Fulton NPR, Louisville Public Media, April 18, 2026. “A lot of us are still recovering from antisocial habits formed in the pandemic. And these days, events outside of our control are taking a serious toll on our health. Last fall, 76% of adults surveyed by the American Psychological Association said stress from politics, race relations, violence and inflation has affected their health. They report experiencing headaches, fatigue, depression, nervousness and exhaustion. But the antidote may be hiding in plain sight. Two recent books argue that making room for more fun in your life could counteract both the stress and the tendency to escape it by zoning out online. “Happiness is a state of mind,” Rucker writes. “But fun is something you can do. It doesn’t require education, money or power. All it requires is intentionality. If happiness is a mirage, fun is your backyard oasis.” Fan catch of the year?!This guy caught a foul ball while holding a baby 🤯 — MLB (@mlbbot.bsky.social) 2026-04-20T19:15:36.000Z How to train your brain to see possibility instead of doom, Dr. Hannah Critchlow, the Guardian, April 19, 2026. Importantly, this is not about blind optimism. Our brains are prone to both negativity bias and optimism bias – the tendency to be sensitive to threat while also overestimating positive outcomes for ourselves. Navigating uncertainty well means balancing these tendencies, avoiding catastrophising at one end, and wishful thinking at the other.✂️ Ultimately, the question is not whether we can eliminate uncertainty, but how we relate to it. We can treat it as a threat, clinging to false certainties and narrowing our perspective. Or we can treat it as an inevitable – and potentially generative – feature of life, one that invites exploration, learning and change. The difference lies not in what life throws at us, but in the habits of mind we cultivate. In a rapidly changing world, the ability to tolerate uncertainty may be one of our most important cognitive skills. It protects against both paralysis and delusion, avoids kneejerk reactions, and underpins sound decision-making. Perhaps most importantly of all, it opens the door to possibility. Less than 13% of people diagnosed with pancreatic cancer live for more than five years, making it one of the deadliest cancers. There is no routine screening for pancreatic cancer, such as colonoscopy or mammogram, and symptoms typically don’t show up until the disease is advanced. Once detected, there are few options for treatment. Only about 20% of cases are operable, which is currently required for someone to be eligible to join a pancreatic cancer vaccine trial. The vaccines work as a type of so-called immunotherapy, harnessing a person’s immune system to fight cancer cells. The goal is not to eliminate existing tumors, but instead to stamp out lingering, undetected cancer cells, and later any new cells that form before they can cause a recurrence. Patients still have surgery to remove tumors. After that, the mRNA vaccines are personalized for each individual using genetic material taken from their unique tumor cells. In the clinical trial, after getting the vaccine, the patients also received chemotherapy, which is standard post-op treatment for operable pancreatic cancer.✂️ Six years after treatment, Gustafson and six others who responded to the treatment are still alive, along with two of the eight people who did not respond. Two of the responders, including the one who died, had a cancer recurrence; Gustafson’s cancer has not come back. NOTE: mRNA research has also been showing promise for another hitherto incurable, aggressive cancer – glioblastoma (brain cancer). Here’s hoping research continues! 🌎 15 Ways to Celebrate Earth Day With Kids, Kayla Craig, WTTW (PBS), April 12, 2026. Every spring, my neighbors gather in a local park for a community clean-up day. It’s a gentle nudge to emerge from our winter hibernation, breathe fresh air and connect with each other. Together, young and old alike pick up litter, plant flowers, and rake the remaining fall leaves so there’s plenty of room to get outside and play in the park’s green spaces. At the end of the workday, we’re all a little dirty, a lot tired, and the park is ready to provide endless amounts of memories. While this annual clean-up tradition is fun, it also acts as a reminder for all of us (the youngest among us included!) to take care of the environment every day. Young children have a lot to teach us grown-ups about caring for our planet. As I watch my four kids grow, I marvel at their innate curiosity and genuine care for living things. When my son reminds me to turn off the running sink or asks if we can plant wildflowers for the bees in our neighborhood, I’m reminded conservation is not just for adults. Kids are never too young to appreciate nature and care for their communities by tending to the environment. What better way to help your children foster an empathetic relationship with our planet— than by celebrating Earth Day together with some fun activities? 🎂 Resistance Recipes 🥘 How about some comfort food? Yes, the boys are back in town as the year’s first endangered piping plovers have landed at Montrose Beach, the group Chicago Piping Plovers reported Monday. Once again, early bird honors go to Pippin, the unlucky-in-love bachelor who’s marking his third year at Montrose in search of a mate. Shortly after monitors confirmed Pippin’s presence, they clocked the arrival of Imani, who hatched at Montrose in 2021. “Imani and Pipping are already right back at scrapping with each other to establish territory,” plover monitors said. According to Chicago Piping Plovers, Pippin is missing his right foot, which observers had noted was tangled in debris last year. “He has a slight limp, but otherwise appears healthy, strong and is working the beach like he owns it,” the group shared on social media. Now the wait is on for Imani’s mate Searocket — the pair have successfully reared chicks two years running. Plover watchers will be on the lookout for any of the couple’s offspring — Nagamo (2024) or Bean and El (2025) — and are also hopeful and potential love interest shows up for Pippin.
