Nebraska Republicans Support Trump's Iran War Fiasco [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2026-04-13 We are now seeing a consistent pattern with Republican presidents. They get the U.S. involved in a failed war in the Middle East and crash the economy. George W. Bush invaded Iraq and Afghanistan and the economy collapsed in 2008. He left office as a failed president with a miserly 29% approval rating. Since then, Republicans have sent Bush down the memory and pretend that he was never the president. Unfortunately, we’ve seen a similar scenario play out in the current Trump presidency. When he ran for president in 2024, Trump promised rapid and fast price cuts and an economic boom beginning on day one. He also promised no new wars. Trump was elected under false pretenses and ran the most fraudulent campaign in history. Trump attacked Iran because he was conned and manipulated by Israeli prime minister Bibi Netanyahu. At a meeting in the Situation Room on February 11, Netanyahu contended that a war with Iran would be swift and decisive. (This is the game guy who assured us that the overthrow of Saddam Hussein would have an enormous, positive effect on the Middle East.) From the NY Times on April 7, 2026: “In the Situation Room on Feb. 11, Mr. Netanyahu made a hard sell, suggesting that Iran was ripe for regime change and expressing the belief that a joint U.S.-Israeli mission could finally bring an end to the Islamic Republic. Mr. Netanyahu and his team outlined conditions they portrayed as pointing to near-certain victory: Iran’s ballistic missile program could be destroyed in a few weeks. The regime would be so weakened that it could not choke off the Strait of Hormuz, and the likelihood that Iran would land blows against U.S. interests in neighboring countries was assessed as minimal. Besides, Mossad’s intelligence indicated that street protests inside Iran would begin again and — with the impetus of the Israeli spy agency helping to foment riots and rebellion — an intense bombing campaign could foster the conditions for the Iranian opposition to overthrow the regime. The Israelis also raised the prospect of Iranian Kurdish fighters crossing the border from Iraq to open a ground front in the northwest, further stretching the regime’s forces and accelerating its collapse. Sounds good to me, Mr. Trump told the prime minister. To Mr. Netanyahu, this signaled a likely green light for a joint U.S.-Israeli operation. When Mr. Trump joined the meeting, Mr. Ratcliffe briefed him on the assessment. The C.I.A. director used one word to describe the Israeli prime minister’s regime change scenarios: “farcical.” At that point, Mr. Rubio cut in. “In other words, it’s bullshit,” he said. The president then turned to General Caine. “General, what do you think?” General Caine replied: “Sir, this is, in my experience, standard operating procedure for the Israelis. They oversell, and their plans are not always well-developed. They know they need us, and that’s why they’re hard-selling.” General Caine shared with Mr. Trump and others the alarming military assessment that a major campaign against Iran would drastically deplete stockpiles of American weaponry, including missile interceptors, whose supply had been strained after years of support for Ukraine and Israel. General Caine saw no clear path to quickly replenishing these stockpiles. He also flagged the enormous difficulty of securing the Strait of Hormuz and the risks of Iran blocking it. Mr. Trump had dismissed that possibility on the assumption that the regime would capitulate before it came to that. The president appeared to think it would be a very quick war — an impression that had been reinforced by the tepid response to the U.S. bombing of Iran’s nuclear facilities in June.” J.D. Vance also advised Trump not to initiate hostilities with Iran. What that means is that Trump ignored the vice president, the secretary of state, the head of CIA and the chairman of the joints chiefs when he made his decision to go to war with Iran. Instead, he got conned by Netanyahu who has been falsely claiming for over thirty years that Iran is on the verge of getting a nuclear weapon. Trump is foolish and reckless. Netanyahu had lobbied previous presidents to attack Iran but they all refused because they knew that a war with Iran would be a quagmire. Only Trump was dumb enough to attack Iran. There is currently a temporary “ceasefire” in the Middle East that may last until April 22. Trump did call off his massive bombing raids — for now. Meanwhile, the Israelis have continued the war with no end in sight. peace. After 21 hours of negotiations, peace talks between the U.S. and Iran collapsed. Apparently, the Trump regime’s two goals in the negotiations with Iran were a commitment by Iran not to develop a nuclear weapon and the opening the Strait of Hormuz. The problem is that the first goal had been achieved by the 2015 Obama nuclear agreement and the Strait was open before the war. This failure speaks volumes about the incompetence of the Trump regime. Trump now has nothing but bad options. His regime could pursue time consuming negotiations with the Iranians over its nuclear program. The talks over the 2015 nuclear took two years. Unfortunately, the Iranians have no incentive to trust Trump since he repudiated the Obama era deal in 2018 and began bombing Iran in 2026 when negotiations were actually making progress. The other choice is a resumption of a war that has already created the most significant oil shock since 1980. It is doubtful that Trump’s blockade of the Strait or a massive bombing campaign will clear the Strait. The Iranians fought the Iraqis for 8 years and endured huge casualties in a brutal war. They can endure a lot of pain. The only way to capture the Strait is with a massive land invasion and a permanent occupation of portions of Iran. That would require the reinstitution of the draft and a tax increase. Just what — if anything — has the U.S.-Israeli war accomplished to date? “Today, the Iranian regime is still in place. They still have thousands of missiles and retain their highly enriched uranium and now they’re negotiating for a firm grip on the Strait of Hormuz in perpetuity to end the war. Meanwhile, we’ve lost 14 U.S. servicemen and women and hundreds more have been wounded; spent tens of billions of dollars; and badly depleted our supplies battering Iran. At the same time, inflation is raging again and gas is at $4.15 a gallon and rising — $1.20 more than the day before we decided to launch a war against Iran. Remind me again why this was a good idea?” David Axelrod In what should have come as no surprise, the members of the Nebraska Congressional delegation back this madness. Pete Ricketts, Deb Fischer, Mike Flood, Don Bacon and Adrian Smith have all voted to block any resolutions that would limit Trump’s power to wage war in Iran. Chair Jane Kleeb said the Republican Party “owns this chaos, and Nebraska families and our troops are paying the price.” “They own Trump’s erratic, unhinged behavior,” Kleeb went on to say. “They own the gas prices, crushing working people. If a Democrat were in the White House acting this way, every reporter in the country would be asking every cabinet secretary when they plan to invoke the 25th. Republicans stay silent. They built him, and they own every bit of this mess. The fix is clear: vote Democrats into office in massive numbers, and hope our allies can help hold the world together while Trump unravels it.” Every Republican in Congress is responsible for this disaster. You can’t vote out Trump in the midterms, but you can vote out the people who enable him. MAGA means Morons Are Governing America. You are not allowed to give up. Blue wave 2026!
