[1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2026-04-13 Note: I was looking through old drafts, seeing if there was anything worth saving before everything went up in site change flames, and saw this. Don’t think I ever hit “publish” on it. I hope you enjoy it now. When I was a young man, living in an old house along Route 50 in Northern Virginia, I met a very, very old man, who told me of his favorite times as a boy: the turkey drives. He and the other intrepid boys of the country would hire out, sometimes for unimaginable multiple dollars a trip, to drive flocks of turkeys down the highway to Washington to market, keeping the ill-tempered birds to the road with sticks. He talked about always having to think of the turkeys first, no matter their own circumstances. It was a tough job but a fine adventure, and quite profitable around the holidays, when demand for turkeys soared as the birds could not. No idea why this memory jumped up from the fog and rain tonight. Maybe to prod a retroactive prayer for the poor, cold boys on the run home from a Christmas drive. Wherever you may be tonight, may it be a story you’d be happy to tell a young person in years to come.
