[1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2026-04-02 We are the Good News gang. We collect good news and then pass it on. It looks like 2026 might be a tumultuous year and we cannot afford to become discouraged. A lot of people are in this fight and we will win together. We thought our decentralized democracy was resilient enough to withstand any attack. We were wrong. Now we are tying to bring democracy back. Concentrated effort is needed in the immediate future and cautious monitoring will be needed for some time. Now is the time when we need the strong efforts of all of us. Let’s work together and save our democracy! RESISTANCE You are not alone in this struggle. Many other folks, largely Democratic and liberal, are working toward the same goal. Look at the No Kings demonstrations held on the 28th of March. The final count of participants is not yet available but an early estimate is that 8 million folks hit the streets to protest. PaulTS reminded us of the many people working behind the visible demonstrations. He praises those who host meetings about being aware of your rights, folks who establish bail bond funds before the march in case some are arrested, and generous people who agree to accompany these demonstrators who do get arrested. Look at the resistance calendar by Indivisible , which highlights demonstrates protests on a weekly basis, as well as special occasions, like No Kings Day. Check out their website, which is customized for your time zone and location. When I go there, I find Pacific times and places. Your experience will be different. ELECTIONS This is a repeat but it is worth saying again. Emily Singer gave us a report on the congressional seats Democrats are targeting in November. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee [DCCC] published a list of 44 seatspresently held by Republicans but Democrats think they have a chance of winning. Considering the rate of Republican retirements, the number of credible contests keeps on rising. The “Run Everywhere” Project described by Bethesda 1971, shows efforts to place a Democrat in state and federal elections, even Red States. We will win some of these contests. LEGAL WINS David Kirp said that “It’s easy to miss but the lower courts are actually doing their job.” He describes how these judges are handing down rulings that protect our democracy, in spite of threats to their safety. They have run out of patience with lies from the Department of Justice, with lawyers who plead ignorance of matters of law, and with the DOJ habit of presenting a case without evidence. The judges seem to think the DOJ has no respect for the law. I agree. The lower court judges are working on our side. A RECOVERY STORY New England peregrine falcon According to the Vermont Center for Ecostudies , Peregrine falcon are faster than cheetahs, making them the fastest creatures on earth. They are carnivores and predators and excellent hunters. The adult Peregrine measures about 15 to 20 inches in length, with males being smaller than females. Males weigh about 2 pounds and females weigh about 3 pounds. Color is gray and brown, thecolor of rocks. (Also, I think they have big feet.) Peregrines mate for several seasons but not necessarily for life. If one of the pair dies or just wanders off, the remaining bird will look for a new mate. They are basically solitary. They stay with a mate during breeding season and while their chicks need care. Then they go their separate ways. Peregrines can be found in various habitats from the arctic to the tropics. They live on rock cliffs, buildings, and bridges. The eastern peregrine, which we are looking at today, traditionally ranged from New England, to the Adirondack Mountains, and south along the spine of the Appalachian Mountains into Georgia. Population in the 1940s was estimated to be 700 adults. By the 1960s, Peregrines had disappeared, victims of DDT and loss of habitat. Recovery started with passage of the National Environmental Policy Act in 1969. Among other provisions, DDT was banned. The next piece of legislation was the Endangered Species Act of 1973.This law protected Peregrines and provided funds for recovery programs. In the 1970s, a technique for captive breeding was developed. A supply of birds was established to help introduction of them into their former range. Approximately 300 birds were released into the wild in the 1970s and 1980s into Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts. Recovery was slow at first. In 1991, there were only 44 adult Peregrines counted. In 1999, peregrine population was estimated to be 600 adults. The species was removed from the engendered list. Today there are an estimated 2000 adult Peregrines in New England. The Peregrines have changed their nesting sites over the last few decades. They are now frequently spotted on buildings, bridges, and other human-built structures. This was not the case in the last century. I speculate that the birds are moving into urban areas because of loss of habitat. Safe nesting sites in the city are not as likely to disappear because of development. Once a bridge or an office building is built, it will stay there for several years. The peregrines can return to last year’s nesting site and it will still be there. According to the New Hampshire Audubon Society , volunteers have installed platforms in nesting sites to facilitate building a nest and raising chicks. Another ongoing project of state Audubon societies is banding of chicks. Banded chicks return to point of origin at a rate of 25 percent. The rest of the chicks are not necessarily dead. Some have been found as far north as Canada and as far south as Georgia. Peregrines are no longer considered endangered. Activists are very happy with that change but have not relaxed monitoring the species. Peregrines came back from essentially nothing but are considered fragile and in need of ongoing attention. TECHNOLOGY I’m behind the curve in being aware of the development of plug-in solar panels, but I’m impressed. Place panel in the sun and plug it into a regular electrical outlet. The energy generated by the panel will join your home electricity. You don’t have to own a home to enjoy the benefits. Renters can install the system because it does not require structural modifications. A Google search revealed several sources. You can probably find one close to you. ACTIONS WE CAN TAKE NOW Brainwrap hosts a continuing report on fundraising for Democratic candidates. There are options for you to choose which campaigns to support, or all of them. Good News Roundup has a fundraiser going with emphasis on reclaiming the House. FiftyFifty.one has a motto of Fifty demonstrations, Fifty states, One movement. You would be very welcome to join them. Mobilize.us serves as a bulletin board for several organizations active in the resistance. The ACLU plays a key role in filing lawsuits o stop voter suppression. It is an ongoing battle. We can get involved at ACLU. The Democratic Party. We know we aren’t perfect, but we care and the other guys are really bad. Look into Swing Left . They are aggressively striving to take back the House and are working on races right now! BYE I’m really happy to be here with you. Let’s all go forth and do something nice for ourselves. Hugs.
