Book of Shapes: customizable SVG patterns for print and web [1] ['Rob Beschizza'] Date: 2026-10-01 Book of Shapes [via] is a collection of minimalist generative SVG patterns created by Nikolaj Sokolowski. Beautiful and elaborate, yet each defined by a few lines of code, they can be customized for use on the web or in print. I think my favorite is the one named Joy Division; it's fun to be able to customize its parameters. There are dozens to start with, organized into categories (grid, radial, noise, flow, isometric, organic, distortion and physics) and accompanied by explainers for the generative techniques in play. The output is provided under a free license allowing commercial use, with some stipulations (e.g. "not Joy Division"). You can even have it output Swiss Designy posters with the custom SVGs on them, perfect for advertising live events that you want only mathematicians and type designers to attend. Come and see my new cantorcore chipfolk band Phyllotaxis Bloom, we're opening for Isometric Noise Field II at the Eigenvenue.
