Plant Smart: database of plants harmful to pets [1] ['Rob Beschizza'] Date: 2026-09-03 Plant Smart is a database of plants that are harmful to pets, so you're not stuck asking Google or Claude if you just killed Rover by letting him eat a daffodil. Narcissus spp. is toxic to cats, dogs, horses, small mammals and reptiles. The reported severity is severe. Also known as Daffodils, Amaryllis, Onions, And Allies and Wild Daffodil. The site features 281 toxic plants under 2,074 common names, all searchable, listed on a single page, and indexed like a field guide. For each there's the botanical name, photos, affected animals, and the associated symptoms and their severity. There's also a safe plants list and a symptom finder for those "what did they get into?" moments. (I'm glad to see Boston Ferns are safe to eat, as I have one every day for lunch.) The site is the work of Wilhelm Murdoch, a software engineer, and was just rebuilt after the first version "aged like fine milk" due to suboptimal choices. "My friends can no longer accuse me of trying to teach people how to poison their neighbour's pets," he writes. If your animal is in distress right now, skip this page. Call your veterinarian, the ASPCA Animal Poison Control on (888) 426-4435 or the Pet Poison Helpline on (855) 764-7661. Fees may apply.
