Open Waters is a game about being cold, wet and scared [1] ['Rob Beschizza'] Date: 2026-08-31 Open Waters is a game in development designed to induce thalassophobia: the intense and supposedly irrational fear of large bodies of water. The teaser trailer had me clenched within seconds and that was before that thing even showed up. You are LOST in Open Waters. Open Waters is a first-person ocean survival horror game. Stranded in a small boat, you must navigate treacherous waters, evade creatures of the deep, and find your way back to safety before the ocean drags you into its depths. It's early days, with no release date set, but you can add it to your wishlist on steam and start enjoying themed nightmares the next time you sleep. It's by FluffyGameDev, whose other game in development, Attrax, is a shooter with logic puzzles that reminds me of Portal. Here's a nice bit of megalophobia from the screenshots: Perhaps you would like to be cold, wet and scared in 1975? Check out Still Wakes the Deep, a similarly-themed wet rig nightmare from the creators of Everybody's Gone to the Rapture and Dear Esther—currently less than $10 on Steam. Previously: • Another oil rig explosion, and the science of dispersants • 4 dead and 16 injured in Mexico oil rig fire, no word yet on how much fuel spilled • The 1983 diving accident that killed five through explosive decompression [END] --- [1] Url: https://boingboing.net/2026/08/31/open-water-is-a-game-about-being-cold-wet-and-scared.html Published and (C) by BoingBoing Content appears here under this condition or license: Creative Commons BY-NC-SA 3.0. via Magical.Fish Gopher News Feeds: gopher://magical.fish/1/feeds/news/boingboing/
