Authorities in Japan baffled by illegal bread dumping [1] ['Rob Beschizza'] Date: 2026-08-28 Illegal bread dumping is confounding park officials in Daisen, a small town in Japan's Tottori prefecture. Large numbers of loaves, totalling 39 kilograms, have appeared on the Daisen loop road near Daisenji Temple in recent days—a meal accompanied on one occasion by fresh, neatly arranged chicken livers. The only guess is that someone is trying to feed the animals living in the scenic region, which would be a bad idea: "At a time when bear damage in rural foothills has become a problem, this is a careless and dangerous act," said one person quoted in The Mainichi. The first dumped bread was found around noon on Aug. 14. A staff member of the Natural Parks Foundation's Tottori branch, which is entrusted with management of the park by the Ministry of the Environment, was patrolling by car when they found 30 loaves of bread placed along a roughly 100-meter stretch of guardrail. The loaves were larger than a typical loaf sold at supermarkets. They weighed 16.7 kg in total. More bread was dumped on other days, including the same location, leading the park to report it as illegal dumping to police. "the food was arranged conspicuously at equal intervals, and I can sense an intention to have it eaten," said Shoichiro Hiraki with the Natural Park Foundation. Bizarre acts of dumping on record include a huge bag of plastic balls, onto an escalator, and a U.K. citizen arrested in Japan for dumping trash in a mailbox. Taxpayers in Britain will be footing the enormous bill for cleaning up a notorious dumping site there.
