GTA 6 is now paywalling its own advertisements [1] ['Grant St. Clair'] Date: 2026-08-17 For better or worse, the state of the contemporary game industry has always been reflected in Rockstar's blockbuster Grand Theft Auto series. The mid-2000s push toward gritty realism (i.e. putting a brown filter on everything), the emergence of ruthlessly exploitative live-service elements, even the 3D sandbox tropes we now take for granted — GTA has always been a time capsule of the triple-A gaming sphere at large. If that's still the case, GTA 6's marketing runup has a pretty vicious indictment of it. In the span of a few short months, we've gone from having trailers for trailers to straight-up paywalling trailers: the game's upcoming "Extended Look," which will show us actual gameplay for the first time, will be streaming exclusively on Netflix. They are asking you, literally and without exaggeration, to pay to be advertised to. What stage of capitalism is this? Granted, it will be uploaded to YouTube for free later on the same day, but some cold corporate calculus has deemed that the hype behind GTA 6 is so seismic that the prospect of seeing a trailer a few hours early will drive subscriptions. To be honest? I don't think they're wrong. GTA 6's high price tag has already proven no impediment, with the vast majority of its estimated 4.3 million preorders springing for the $100 ultimate edition. What's another fifteen bucks to watch a trailer? I can't even say I'm immune to the hype I'm looking down my nose at. Much of my last week was occupied with hunting down one of the few PS5 Pros still for sale in Los Angeles County, purely to squeeze a few more frames out of GTA 6 when November rolls around. I fully expect Grand Theft Auto 6 to be one of the best and best-selling games of all time, as will anyone else with eyes purely based on Rockstar's literally flawless track record. Evidently, Rockstar has reached the same conclusion: it takes a special kind of talent to nickel-and-dime your players like this before the game is even out.
