Fog Panther is a new image editor for Linux [1]

If the lack of a native port of Adobe Creative Suite (or The GIMP's peculiarities) is a problem for you on Linux, check out Fog Panther, which describes itself as "a professional image editor" built natively for the open-source operating system.

It offers full layer-based editing, layer masks, non-destructive adjustment layers, PSD file support, and CMYK color management with ICC profile support. It's commercial software, but not subscription-based. A one-time license costs $69.99 and includes all future updates.

Embedded objects, layer groups, adjustment layers, and full PSD support. Build complex compositions with a non-destructive workflow that keeps every element editable. Embedded fonts mean your files look right on every machine.

It has bells and whistles: nondestructive adjustment layers for levels, curves, color grading, blend modes, embedded fonts, and so on. For print professionals, soft-proofing and CMYK output are supported. It natively supports TIFF, PNG, JPEG, WebP, RAW, AVIF, and its own .fog format. The app is installable via Snap and Flathub.

GIMP's carried a lot of weight over the years, but I always snarl up somewhere and wouldn't use it for print work. Krita is a fine illustration app but I'm going to say "print work" again because that's the sigh that Fog Panther has apparently heard and got me installing Ubuntu again just to check it out. A 30-day free trial is available, requiring no payment details upfront.

Note that Apple recently launched Creator Studio, a subscription bundle (at $12.99/month) built around Pixelmator Pro (acquired from its original developers last year) alongside Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro.

Fog Panther's early reception suggests caution. The screenshots use single-layer example images that look very sloppish, hardly appealing to the creative pros this is being pitched to. The company behind it, Lukemani, is a consultancy ("challenging established business thought to forge new partnerships and drive transformations") with an address in Canada and presence in Jordan ("Lukemani Advisory & Private Equity specializes in Middle East socioeconomic development through technology research and investments").
