Caffeinated coffee may stave off dementia [1] ['Gail Sherman'] Date: 2026-02-13 According to a study comprising 43 years of data on over 130,000 patients, drinking caffeinated coffee was associated with a lower risk of dementia. The study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, found that drinking two to three cups of coffee or one to two cups of tea—approximately 300mg of caffeine—reduced dementia risk by 18% and 14%, respectively. The positive correlation held even in patients with higher genetic risk factors for dementia. Decaffeinated coffee had no effect, and decaffeinated tea was not included in the study. Some details are missing, such as the coffee preparation method and whether milk or a sweetener was added. Speaking with NBC News, one of the study's authors urged caution: "We are not recommending that people who don't drink coffee start drinking," said lead study author Dr. Yu Zhang, a research trainee at Mass General Brigham in Boston. "We are just seeing that for people who already drink coffee, the results are really reassuring." That said, if you are a coffee-swilling, cannabis-using GenXer, the good news on the health front has been surprisingly plentiful lately.
