Yawning has an unexpected influence on the fluid inside your brain [1] ['Ellsworth Toohey'] Date: 2026-02-04 Turns out your yawn is doing way more than signaling boredom or fatigue – it's actually reorganizing the flow of fluids in your brain in ways scientists never expected. Researchers at Neuroscience Research Australia recently placed 22 volunteers in MRI scanners and had them yawn, breathe deeply, and suppress yawns to examine what was actually happening inside their heads. What they found completely upended their assumptions. Read the full study at New Scientist "The yawn was triggering a movement of the cerebrospinal fluid in the opposite direction than during a deep breath," says researcher Adam Martinac. "And we're just sitting there like, whoa, we definitely didn't expect that." Instead of cerebrospinal fluid (the liquid cushioning your brain) flowing inward as it does during deep breathing, yawning pumps it out toward the spinal column, along with venous blood. This creates space for a massive surge of fresh arterial blood – over a third more than normal deep breathing delivers. The study also revealed something oddly personal: everyone has their own unique "yawning signature" based on how they move their tongue. It's like a neurological fingerprint, but for something as mundane as getting sleepy. Yawning is ancient – crocodiles do it, dinosaurs probably did it too – yet we still don't fully understand why evolution retained this behavior. The new research suggests it may be a sophisticated brain-maintenance system, potentially supporting temperature regulation, waste clearance, or both.
