Slender Man stabber missing for day after removing monitoring bracelet [1]

Morgan Geyser, the now 22-year-old woman whose obsession with the Slender Man creepypasta character led her to stab a schoolmate when they were 12 years old, went missing Sunday after removing her monitoring bracelet. Geyser, out after seven years in detention, was back in custody that evening. Police in Madison, Wisconsin report that she took a bus to Illinois and was found there.

It remains unclear why 12 hours passed between when she was last seen and when police and the public were notified. She was taken into custody in Illinois around 10:34 p.m. Nov. 23, police said. She had been granted conditional release earlier this year after a judge he saw no risk to the public or to her. Geyser and co-defendant Anissa Weier were charged with the attempted homicide of their friend Payton Leutner, whom Geyser stabbed 19 times near Davids Park in Waukesha in May 2014. All three girls were 12 years old at the time.

A statement from Leutner's family, before Geyser's reconfinement:

"The family would like to thank all of the law enforcement entities involved in the efforts to apprehend Morgan," the family said. "The Leutner family also wish to thank the outpouring of support from family, friends and well-wishers who have contacted them during this difficult time."

A long-limbed figure added inconspicuously to mundane photographs of children, Slender Man became a poorly-received Hollywood movie in 2018; among the failings was its tasteless fictionalization of Geyser and Weier's crime. They were sentenced to mental confinement, Weier for 25 years and Geyser for 40 years. Weier was released in 2021 and completed her monitoring program in 2023.

That Geyser headed for the Chicago suburbs rather than Summerwind is maybe a good sign, but it seems she's not yet ready for the real world.
