Doctype magazine: type-in apps for modern computers [1] ['Rob Beschizza'] Date: 2025-11-24 If you remember type-in computer programs, Doctype magazine is for you. But it's not an exercise in pure nostalgia—the apps you can punch in are just as simple as BASIC was, but use HTML. They run in the web browser, with no internet connection or server required: "10 wonderful web apps, including games, toys, puzzles and utilities. No coding knowledge needed, you just type." What do I get for my hard-earned cash? A nicely-made magazine with a glossy colour cover on the outside and ten printed listings of web pages on the inside, accompanied by illustrations and info. I don't understand, it's a magazine of HTML source code? Yes, you type it in then you get to play the games and run the apps. Type it all in? Why?! Because it's a lost form of software distribution. It was intriguing and rewarding back then, maybe it still is now. Don't I need a web server or something? No, you edit a file on your machine then open it in a browser (don't worry, there's a beginners' guide). Can I cheat and get a PDF instead? No. [END] --- [1] Url: https://boingboing.net/2025/11/24/doctype-magazine-type-in-apps-for-modern-computers.html Published and (C) by BoingBoing Content appears here under this condition or license: Creative Commons BY-NC-SA 3.0. via Magical.Fish Gopher News Feeds: gopher://magical.fish/1/feeds/news/boingboing/
