[1] [] Date: 2025-04 Join us at this event to review the reforms and strategies of the new government and to discuss how it has been addressing the pressing economic, social and political challenges we face. We’ll look at the government’s five key missions – economic growth, clean energy, safer streets, opportunities for all and an NHS fit for the future – and the actions they have taken on these so far. Where do we need to see new policy development to deliver lasting economic and social change? About the speakers Will Hutton is a political economist, author and journalist. He is President of the Academy of Social Sciences, a regular columnist for the Observer and host of The We Society podcast. Will has chaired two government Commissions – one on Public Sector Pay for the Coalition government in 2011 and one on the Creative Industries for the Labour government in 2007 – and has chaired/directed and/or founded four think tanks: the Employment Policy Institute, the Work Foundation, the Big Innovation Centre, and the Purposeful Company, whose Growth Trilogy papers have been welcomed by the government. He is the author of a number of books, most recently This Time No Mistakes: How to Remake Britain. Polly Toynbee is a journalist, author and broadcaster. A Guardian columnist and broadcaster, she was formerly the BBC's social affairs editor. She has written for the Observer, the Independent and Radio Times and been an editor at the Washington Monthly. She has won numerous awards including a National Press Award and the Orwell Prize for Journalism. Her latest book, co-authored with David Walker, is The Only Way Is Up: How to Take Britain from Austerity to Prosperity. Chaired by Dr Sophie Whiting. She joined the department of PoLIS, University of Bath, as a lecturer in politics in June 2015, having previously worked and studied at the University of Liverpool. Her research interests include UK devolution and political parties - with a particular focus on Northern Ireland. She is also interested in the role of women and gender within post-conflict politics.
