About the Assistant Science Editor role Do you browse science journals for fun? Regularly find yourself following your curiosity down scientific rabbit holes? Do you relish being the first to report on new important research and enjoy pondering breakthroughs’ potential implications outside of the lab?The Assistant Science Editor at The Conversation U.S. will be part of a team of editors who cover a wide range of science-related topics. TCUS helps readers understand new discoveries – how they’re made, what they mean and why they matter.The Assistant Science Editor will focus on research into how the universe works on both the grandest and most nano of scales. The ideal candidate will have in-depth knowledge of the physical sciences along with deep curiosity and flexible interests across the science beat. They must have at least 3-5 years of experience working in a daily news environment as either a reporter/writer or an editor. Prior experience editing on the job is a must. Key Responsibilities: Commission and edit explanatory articles and evidence-based analysis written by leading academic experts for general readership. Produce 3-4 clear, thoughtful and important stories weekly for the Science + Technology desk, with a special focus on new research. Scour journals for breakthroughs and discoveries that readers should know about. Discover leading researchers in science and recruit them as authors, with an emphasis on discovering new voices and commissioning diverse scholars. Respond to pitches from potential authors in academia. Maintain clear, timely and professional communications with academics and member university communication teams. Identify potential authors based at member schools and create enthusiasm and goodwill for them to write for The Conversation U.S. Work toward becoming a thought leader on the beat by attending subject-specific conferences. Skills/Knowledge: Highly organized, articulate, strong writer and editor with the ability to work to a daily deadline, manage multiple tasks and work as part of a diverse collaborative team with high standards. Talent for expressing complicated ideas in clear, accessible writing that is purged of jargon. Reporting skills and news judgment to generate ideas for stories and seek out meaningful or undiscovered new research of interest to the public Ability to work with scholar-authors to structure stories, simplify research without losing nuance, line edit copy into plain English and fact-check Ability to understand and avoid conflicts of interest Comfort working within a number of online editing and project management platforms Ability to choose appropriate and arresting photos, graphs and other visual elements to accompany stories Ability to purposefully collaborate and be part of a dynamic team Excellent writing skills and willingness to learn and apply our house style Willingness to ask for help when needed and accept constructive criticism Every TC editorial team member is expected to: Understand and embrace our mission of democratizing scholarly knowledge for the public good Attend daily news meetings and other staff meetings as required Adopt a problem-solving mindset and the desire to move stories with a sense of urgency Be part of The Conversation’s public outreach: take part in training sessions for scholars, participate in conference panels and be willing to coach scholars in revising their written work Serve as a “buddy” for one assigned member school, reporting on interesting research and faculty at that institution.
