Senior Investigative Editor [1] [] Date: 2022-10 This is a new position at The Conversation, and we are looking for someone who thrives in a start-up environment and is eager not only to lead but to help create and iterate a new path for academics and journalists to work together for the public good. The ideal candidate will have a track record of creating impactful investigative journalism, including stellar research, reporting, writing, and editing skills, and experience working in a team and in partnership with other news organizations and academic experts. Key Responsibilities Evaluate ideas from academics, in concert with other editors, to identify data-rich sources for investigative work. Conduct initial research on chosen ideas to find areas where human harm exists. Serve as a partnership editor among academic and news outlets to find narratives for academic data. Be able to manage both short-term and longer-term investigative projects and media partnerships. Work toward becoming a thought leader by attending conferences. Every member of our editorial team is expected to: Understand and embrace our mission of democratizing scholarly knowledge for the public good. Attend daily news meetings and other staff meetings as required. Be productive remotely, take direction and work productivity with a variety of people. Qualifications At least 15 years of investigative journalism and editorial experience. Demonstrated excellence as an investigative reporter or editor with a record of delivering exclusive and distinctive investigative projects. The ability to edit complex stories in clear and compelling ways and juggle multiple projects at the same time. Experience working with academics is a plus. Experience managing partnerships and working with complex data sets is a plus. Ability to work with scholar-authors to structure stories, simplify research without losing nuance, line edit copy into plain English, and fact-check. Ability to understand and avoid conflicts of interest. Good grammar and story structure skills. Attention to detail and excellent organizational skills. Ability to purposefully collaborate and be part of a dynamic team. Excellent writing skills. Willingness to ask for help when needed.
