Carceral Policy, Policing, and Race | Inaugural Conference | SOAS [1] [] Date: 2022-08 In the wake of a resurgent Black Lives Matter movement, we have witnessed a renewed dialogue about the salience of race in systems of policing and prisons. However, despite the international scope of these solidarities, campaigns for racial justice continue to be monopolised by voices in the Global North, particularly the United States. The Carceral Policy, Policing and Race Conference 2022 explores the varying realities – and meanings – of carcerality around the world, and asks how these realities have been shaped by histories of colonialism and slavery. Recalibrating a discussion that has been dominated by perspectives from the Global North, we will adopt a truly comparative framework to connect the carceral experiences of those across the traditional African, Asian and Middle Eastern remit of SOAS to those in Europe, the Americas and Oceania. Grounded in this understanding, this conference will discuss solutions, forms of resistance and alternative futures. Identifying action that is already being taken, as well as exploring new paths that remain uncharted, the Carceral Policy, Policing and Race Conference will bring together researchers, policymakers and activists alike, united in a desire to decolonise systems of criminal justice around the world. This event is free to attend, but please register below. Lunch and refreshments will be provided free of charge on both days. All are welcome - academics, students, activists, policymakers, professionals, practitioners, and anybody interested in issues of carcerality. This is an in-person conference, although some speakers will be joining us virtually. Please find the conference schedule below (subject to change). ONLINE ATTENDANCE For those who cannot attend in person, we will be running a series of online events. This includes a live-stream of the Keynote Address (7th) and the Concluding Roundtable Discussion (8th).
