The Deputy Editor, Politics & Society, will be required to work with academics to generate story ideas spanning politics, foreign affairs, the law and social issues. We hope to appoint someone with some experience in reporting social policy and politics, and experience in online journalism. We are looking for someone with the energy and commitment to unearth new talent that will enhance our expert coverage and make an impact in this post. The Conversation's unique publishing model pairs professional editors with academics to better inform public discourse. Editors for The Conversation need to be voracious readers who are well informed about developments in their field and passionate about developing new ideas. Editors are responsible for working with academics to find out about the latest research and help translate complex ideas into plain language so they can be shared with a wide audience. That means spending time with our university partners and learning about what's happening, especially new research. Editors need to keep up with news and identify opportunities to work with academics to explain topical issues, for example fact checking claims by prominent people or explaining in detail legal or regulatory issues. The Conversation is a trusted journalism brand, and this role requires someone who can protect its hard won credibility. The ideal candidate would have some experience of reporting on politics and good people skills. The ideal candidate would be thoughtful, calm, methodical, rigorous and have a deep commitment to professional impartiality and high ethical standards.
