Professor Happi in an unprecedented way, recently used next generation sequencing technology to perform the first sequence of the new SARS-CoV-2 in Africa, within 48 hours of receiving samples of the first case in Nigeria. This seminal work not only provided an insight into the detailed genetic map of the new coronavirus in Africa, but also paved the way to the development of new countermeasures including new diagnostics, therapeutics and vaccines. In 2021, he received The Trinity Challenge Award: Sentinel forecasting systems for Infectious Disease Risk, Africa Lives-Development Award and became a Fellow of the Academy of Medicine Specialties of Nigeria. Professor Sunday Omilabu (Director @Central Research Laboratory, College of Medicine, University of Lagos) Prof. Sunday Aremu Omilabu is a Professor of Medical Virology, College of Medicine of the University of Lagos; Hospital Virologist, Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) and the Consultant Virologist to the Federal Ministry of Health, Nigeria. He received his B.Sc from University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University, Ife), M.Sc and Ph.D in Virology from the University of Ibadan. He is a fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt/George Foster, Institute for Animal Hygiene and Environment, University of Hohenheim, Stuttgart, Germany, a DAAD Visiting Research Fellow to Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine, Hamburg, Germany. Prof. Omilabu was the pioneer Dean of the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences. He is currently the Lead Investigator of the Virology Research Unit, and the Director of the Central Research Laboratory (CRL), College of Medicine of the University of Lagos (CMUL). He has also been a member of several academic and research boards within Nigeria and abroad.
