The Blast: A push for a “Life Monument” [1] [] Date: 2023-05 TEXAS BACK IN THE ABORTION SPOTLIGHT Texas and abortion returned to the national stage this past weekend after the U.S. Supreme Court agreed to leave a common abortion-inducing drug on the market. The court overturned a decision by U.S. District Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk of Amarillo to pull mifepristone from the market as the legal case proceeds. Now, the case is back before the 5th Circuit, which will hear arguments next month. The case, which already had national implications during the brief FDA freeze, is yet another flag in the ground declaring Texas a major battleground on the issue of abortion. It also comes as state lawmakers could be looking to honor the state’s history of combating abortion. Last week, Sen. Tan Parker, R-Flower Mound, placed Senate Continuing Resolution 24 on the intent calendar, and later this week, the House Culture, Recreation and Tourism Committee will consider House Continuing Resolution 91, filed by Tom Oliverson, R-Cypress. That legislation would allow the State Preservation Board to approve the construction of a replica of the “Life Monument” on the Capitol grounds. The monument is a sculpture of a woman with an unborn child in her womb of mirrored steel, which allows people to see themselves in the reflection. Canadian artist Tim Schmalz created the sculpture, which was first installed in the Church of San Marcello al Corso in Rome but has since found homes around the world. The sculpture is often interpreted to be a depiction of Mary and Jesus. The Senate version was pulled off the chamber’s intent calendar last week but is back on the agenda for tomorrow. Meanwhile, the House version is slated for a hearing on Thursday.
