Our St. Petersburg-based non-profit is seeking a director of HR and administration to support employees, adjuncts and others, located at our headquarters in Florida and working remotely throughout the US. We seek someone with previous experience helping an organization grow and with a record of serving its employees while positioning HR as a strategic and creative contributor to achieve its mission. We are a mission-centric non-profit that performs the functions of a continuing education school, a journalism newsroom, and an international accreditation network. Our staff across our many brands includes: the Pulitzer Prize winning PolitiFact, the largest political fact-checking organization in the U.S; MediaWise, a pioneering media literacy program with a special connection to Gen Z; the International Fact-Checking Network, which brings together 100 fact-checking groups from around the globe to share best practices; and our best-in-class teaching programs that transform news organizations, leaders and journalists to create a sustainable future. The director of HR and administration helps implement the strategic management and daily operational needs of the Poynter’s mission and talent strategy while maintaining legal compliance and creating a diverse, inclusive and vibrant workplace. In addition, this role oversees the administrative staff at Poynter’s St. Petersburg headquarters including facility manager, receptionist and an HR/payroll specialist. Key job responsibilities include: Provide a consultative mindset to research, analyze, develop and implement solutions for Poynter’s human resources needs. Train, coach, and support managers to navigate evaluation, training, promotion, discipline, termination, and other HR issues. Maintain and support the employee review process in alignment with strong employee retention values. Support internal staff training in conjunction with the VP of Teaching and Organizational Strategy and identify relevant available external training for employee development needs. Conduct surveys and seek feedback from employees for continuous process/system improvement with HR functions. Collaborates with senior leadership to understand the organization's goals and strategy related to staffing, recruiting, and retention. Maintain employee-first payroll and benefits programs, supported by the HR/payroll Specialist, ADP, and our group collaborative benefits provider (ICUBA) Maintain a supportive and welcoming environment through administration of Poynter’s facility manager and receptionist. Track and maintain employee hardware and software needs with support of external IT vendor. Requirements and skills Minimum 5 years of HR Business Partner/Generalist experience. Demonstrated organizational leadership and decision-making capability at a senior management level in a collaborative manner. Ability to achieve goals and align interests through cooperation and collaboration with other groups and cross-functional teams, even where no direct reporting relationship exists. Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment and maintain confidentiality when dealing with sensitive matters. Ability to communicate to staff and Board members the short and long-term impact, specific and strategic, of HR policy and procedures. Ability to manage budgets and experience working closely with Nonprofit Controller to achieve organizational financial goals. Demonstrated experience leading HR department(s) through strategic and transactional change. Supervisory experience, in a non-profit organization, preferred. Excellent verbal and written communications skills. Experience with ADP Workforce Now and/or other HRIS software preferred.
