Carrie Bradshaw Has Been Politically Awakened [1]

Sarah Jessica Parker was yesterday afternoon photographed on the set of And Just Like That, cradling a hardback edition of Alexei Navalny’s memoir, Patriot. A brave last testament and admonition to the world, the Russian oppositionist wrote the book while recovering from a Novichok attack in 2020, from the penal colony he was later exiled to, and ultimately died in earlier this year.

SJP – or rather Carrie Bradshaw – also looked like she had recently spent an inordinate amount of time in solitary confinement. That is because she had been costumed in a tarmac-scraping plaid coat, a sequined blouse and a tutu of Brobdingnagian proportions. I am not sure what is happening in this particular episode of AJLT, but a psychic break seems to be expressing itself through a disproportionate amount of tulle, fuchsia and costume earrings. See also: the padded, doughnut-shaped cocktail hat, which had been attached to Bradshaw’s forehead on an extensive, tendrilous ribbon.

Most of Bradshaw’s outfits on this awful, brilliant series appear to have been made in social isolation, the true hysteria of her fashion choices revealing themselves in the cold light of brunch. For example: when she dressed in babushka scarves and marigolds to have a cigarette on her street, when she dressed as a bewitched picnic blanket to have ice cream with the warm sophisticate Seema Patel, and when she dressed in a Brandon Maxwell jumpsuit with the express purpose of upstaging whoever it is that might or might not have died.

There was another book SJP was spotted reading while shooting this season: The Demon of Unrest – a work of nonfiction about the American Civil War – which could just as feasibly provide the title for Bradshaw’s very own (fifth? sixth?) memoir.
