Plaza Classic Film Festival The El Paso Community Foundation Plaza Classic Film Festival kicks off this week, running from Thursday, July 18, to Sunday, July 28, featuring an extensive lineup of events and screenings. The festival’s 17th edition will feature appearances by Academy Award winners Mira Sorvino and Sissy Spacek. Sorvino will present “Mighty Aphrodite” on July 19 and “Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion” on July 20, while Spacek will appear with “Coal Miner’s Daughter” on July 27. The opening day of the film festival offers a diverse schedule, including “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1” at 12:30 p.m., the Marx Brothers’ “The Cocoanuts” at 1 p.m., “Road to Utopia” at 3 p.m., “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2” at 3:30 p.m., “To Catch a Thief” at 7 p.m., and “Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy” at 9 p.m. With more than 90 movies to be screened, the festival will be held in and around the historic Plaza Theatre. This family-friendly, free event will feature two local bands. The El Fresco Music Series offers an array of musical genres, food truck vendors, shopping and special giveaways throughout the summer. The series will conclude with Rock Night on Aug. 9. Information: elpasolive.com Parks and Recreation Month The El Paso Parks and Recreation Department is inviting the community to mark Parks and Recreation Month with a variety of family-friendly events. With more than 300 parks throughout the region, residents and visitors have numerous opportunities to enjoy the recreational activities offered across the city. Throughout July, the Parks and Recreation Department will host numerous events including sports tournaments, kite days and workshops. One of the highlights of the month is the Family Night Campout, scheduled for Friday, July 19, at Galatzan Park, 650 Wallenberg Dr. This event will include camping activities such as learning to set up a camp, stargazing, campfire songs, movies and recreational swimming. The campout will also include a sleepover inside the Galatzan Recreation Center and Polly Harris Senior Center. Cost is $10 for adults, $5 for children younger than 12 and $5 for adults older than 60. Parks and Recreation Month is part of a nationwide initiative by the National Recreation and Park Association to promote the benefits of parks and recreational activities. Boxing at the Lake Experience a night of amateur boxing with a professional atmosphere at Boxing at the Lake, taking place from 7 to 11 p.m. Saturday, July 20, at Ascarate Park, 6900 Delta Dr. This USA Boxing sanctioned event features 25 Olympic-style bouts with fighters from throughout the region and beyond. The event offers a unique outdoor experience under the lights by Ascarate Lake and serves as a stepping stone for fighters aiming to compete in other regional and national events. Admission is $20. Other events Pooch Pool Pawty: Have a refreshing time with your pets during the Pooch Pool Pawty hosted by El Paso Animal Services from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday, July 20, at its headquarters, 5001 Fred Wilson Ave. The event offers a variety of activities and services for pet owners. Free cat and dog adoptions will be available and there will be free pet microchipping from 5 to 8 p.m. In addition, the Eastlake Animal Center will offer low-cost vaccinations, including rabies shots for $24, parvo/distemper for $19, bordetella for $18, and FVRCP for cats at $19. Attendees can also browse vendors, food, a dog splash zone and more. $10 entry fee per pet. Attendees can browse through pottery, jewelry, home accents and seasonal decorations, as well as painting, sculpture and photography. The market also offers food concessions and live entertainment.
