Stable Signature: A new method for watermarking images created by open source generative AI | maybe not so much?

To certain people this is catnip: that all digital content created by AIs can be fingerprinted for later identification.

The truth is that reliance on a technology like this will either lead to making the technology obligatory (and therefore authoritarian) or we will return to a world of “only the bad guys have access to unwatermarked images and the increased credibility which comes with them”.

Better instead to build social structures and aware audiences, than for them to rely upon some sort of nostrum for protection
