When doing good is penalized [1] ['Meteor Blades', 'Greg Dworkin'] Date: 2026-08-29 https://www.cbsnews.com/news/ohio-principal-lakota-east-high-school-begknows-america I thought I had misread this title when it appeared on my Facebook feed, just a screenshot, so I hunted down the story (hunted is doing a lot of work here). The story was not only true, but it was also worse. How is a man “untrustworthy” for being kind? They literally told this man they couldn’t trust him to do the right thing, make the right decision, because he did the right thing. We have lost our effing moral compass in this country. I often say “what have we become” but I feel it no longer can express my sentiments, I need something stronger, because when kindness is penalized so harshly, it stops others from being kind. I also recall reading about priests being arrested for letting homeless folks sleep in churches during extremely cold nights. Instead of finding ways to help humanity thrive, we seem focused on making humanity suffer. We are so deeply flawed as a species, we’ve turned something we invented, money, into the only thing of worth in our lives. That is not to say everyone is bad or mean, there are still plenty of good people in the world. But, the more we penalize kindness, the more the good folks will think twice about being kind, because they have their own lives and families to think about.
