DSA Reality Check [1] ['Greg Dworkin', 'Sabrina Haake', 'Chloris Creator', 'Matthew Adarichev', 'Bill In Portland Maine'] Date: 2026-06-24 By any measure, the Democratic Socialists of America and their supported candidates had a field day in yesterday’s New York Primary, winning three Congressional Primaries (and knocking out two “establishment” Democratic incumbents and apparently picking up six seats in the NYS Assembly. However, these wins added exactly -0- seats to the tally of wins that Democrats need to take back the House. Meanwhile in the competitive NY-17 district (Hudson Valley), mainstream candidate Cait Conley beat progressive Beth Davidson to take on Republican Mike Lawler. And in UT-1, former Congressman Ben McAdams fended off more progressive candidates to win the nomination in a seat that will almost certainly go blue in November. Progressives will certainly have a stronger voice in the House Democratic Caucus next year and there will be more Mayors like Zohran Mamdani in big Democratic cities. But NYC is not NY and NY is not the rest of the nation. To win in November, we need to run the candidates who can actually win in suburban, exurban and rural districts, even if they’re not of the same progressive stripe as Brownstone Brooklyn, the West Village and Washington Heights.
