Spring ephemerals [1] ['View Profile', 'Sabrina Haake', 'Chitown Kev'] Date: 2026-04-26 A short, cheerful story with pictures of wildflowers. Spring ephemerals are small woodland wildflowers that bloom early in the spring. They get this name because they sprout, flower, and produce seeds before the trees fully leaf out. The leaves then die back, leaving only their roots, bulbs, and seeds waiting for the next spring season. This life cycle allows the plants to take advantage of the higher levels of light that reach the forest floor before the canopy fills in. Here are four pictures taken in the last 10 days in a wooded area in eastern Iowa.
