[1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2026-03-26 Much is being made about Democrats having won 30 previously Republican-held state legislative districts in elections in 2025 and thus far in 2026. While Republicans have taken NO Democratic seats. I have considered the information closely, and note the following: A handful of states always elect the entirety of their state legislatures in odd-numbered years. So OF COURSE most of the flips occurred in Mississippi, New Jersey, and Virginia. The other states saw changes in legislative personnel only when a member resigned, died, or in equally rare circumstances. And among those 47 cases, not all states fill untimely vacancies with elections. • In Mississippi, three seats changed hands. Theresa Gillespie Isom won the previously Republican-held 2nd State Senate District. Johnny DuPree won the 45th State Senate District. Justin Crosby won the 22nd State House District. • In New Jersey, five State House seats changed hands. Maureen Rowan won the 2nd District. Anthony Angelozzi won the 8th District. Andrew Macurdy won the 21st District. Vincent Kearney won the 21st District. And Marisa Sweeney won the 25th District. • In Virginia, 13 State House seats changed hands. Candi King won the 23rd District. John McAuliff won the 30th District. Lily Franklin won the 41st District. May Nivar won the 57th District. Stacey Carroll won the 64th District. Nicole Cole won the 66th District. Mark Downey won the 69th District. Jessica Anderson won the 71st District. Leslie Mehta won the 73rd District. Lindsey Dougherty won the 75th District. Kimberly Pope Adams won the 82nd District. Virgil Thornton Sr. won the 86th District. And Kacey Carnegie won the 89th District. So the remaining nine red-to-blue flips occurred in the course of true special elections: Elections to fill unexpected vacancies. >Bobbi Boudman won the Carroll County 7th District in the New Hampshire State House. >Taylor Rehmet won Texas’ 9th State Senate District. >Alex Holladay won Arkansas’ 70th State House District. >Emily Gregory won Florida’s 87th State House District. >Brian Nathan won Florida’s 14th State Senate District. >Eric Gisler won Georgia’s 121st State House District. >Catelin Drey won Iowa’s 1st State Senate District. >Mike Zimmer won Iowa’s 35th State Senate District. >James Malone won Pennsylvania’s 36th State Senate District. ~~When I began writing this, I was agog with the number of southern districts that flipped. But now that I realize that 16 of the 30 flips were in Mississippi and Virginia I am…well… a bit less agog. For Mississippi and Virginia had several-fold more seats in play. But I find it interesting that of the nine flips that occurred in true special elections, five of them were in Dixie. Not enough evidence to weigh in favor of a shift of resources to southern states. But interesting. ~~And before he ran for the Senate, Senator Rehmet was the elected president of both his local and state chapters of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers. And before he ran for the Senate, Senator Nathan was an electrician with International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 915, where he served as a foreman and as lead organizer. So that. Maybe noticeable to persons recruiting legislative candidates down south.
