Intellectual Hygiene: The Maintenance Requirement for Functioning Democracy [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2026-02-27 A people who cannot govern how they KNOW what they KNOW -- CANNOT govern anything else. Democracy doesn't require that we agree on values. It requires that we agree on facts. That common factual floor -- the shared reality from which we debate, decide, and govern -- has been shrinking for decades. Cracked by institutional failure. Shattered by media fragmentation. Buried by algorithms that reward outrage over accuracy. The wellness influencer who builds genuine trust on discipline and purpose, then monetizes it through anti-vaccine content that drives supplement sales. The political commentator whose reasonable critique of institutional failure gradually imports a worldview where no institution can ever be trusted. The pastor who starts with scripture and ends with QAnon. The pattern repeats across platforms and ideologies. The credible parts provide the cover. The harmful parts do the work. The erosion of the common factual floor is not a political problem. It is a coordination problem. When shared reality breaks down, the ability to work together -- in city councils, organizations, communities, families -- collapses with it. There is no neutral position. You are either part of its maintenance or part of its erosion. By the time the pandemic arrived, the common factual floor had contracted to almost nothing. The virus didn't create the crisis of shared reality. It revealed how far the slide had already gone.
