Kitchen Table Kibitzing 2/24/2026: Obama Time [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2026-02-24 Lawren S. Harris: The Red House in Winter (1930) Good evening, Kibitzers! I’m writing on Monday during the giant blizzard. I think we’re well over a foot here, as of mid-afternoon, but it’s hard to tell, what with the howling wind. There’s a lot of drifting, and also, most of the windows are covered with the wet, rather sticky snow. I’m sorry I was not able to redirect about half of this to Thinking Fella. But I am glad I don’t live on Cape Cod, which apparently has more than 80% of customers without power. It’s easy to see why. I observe that Tuesday night is the State of the Union, so we may be lightly attended in here, or we may have everyone hiding out here in horror, at least until Governor Spanberger’s response. So I thought, why not offer some happy videos from a time when we had a real president and first family? Let’s just establish up here that, no, we can’t imagine the current occupant of the Oval Bordello Office doing ANY of these things, or even trying to. BREAKING NEWS! The awesome Brainwrap is running a special campaign TONIGHT: Announcing the Blue26.org 2026 State of the Union Fundraising Challenge! He’s trying to raise $10K for Democrats DURING tonight’s SOTU, through his site, Blue26.org. You can donate to any and all Democrats there, and any donations made during the speech (9 pm ET to ???), to any candidate, will count toward the challenge. See his diary (link #1 above) or the site (link #2 above) for further information. So anyway! Here’s a recent video: President Obama speaking with Pacers great and NBC sports commentator Reggie Miller about international hoops and other subjects, at the NBA All-Star Game in Los Angeles. [3:50] At the other end, here is the famous 2004 DNC keynote speech that put Obama on the political map. [16:05] Okay, get some tissues: here is the last section of his June 2015 eulogy at the funeral of Rev. Clementa Pinckney, in which he famously sang Amazing Grace. [3:46] President Obama takes the trouble to greet worldwide audiences in their own languages. [1:26] The 2012 White House Science Fair clip in which the president geeked out about a marshmallow gun. [3:02] Halloween at the White House, 2016. [1:24] The Obama episode of Jerry Seinfeld’s Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee was pretty entertaining. [19:16] Then-new Obama dog Bo meets the press. [2:46] Here are a couple of Michelle segments. We saw a different Colbert interview the other day, but this one is from December, 2018. [27:53] In July, 2016, James Cordon stopped by the White House to take Michelle on a Carpool Karaoke drive, featuring Missy Elliott. [14:42] That was our segue into music! The In Performance at the White House: Red, White & Blues event’s finale, Sweet Home Chicago, with Buddy Guy and the ensemble and, famously, the president. [3:15] In Performance at the White House: Smithsonian Salutes Ray Charles was the final Obama-era In Performance installment, in February 2016. This clip contains the president’s introduction to the show and the finale, with Usher, the ensemble, and ultimately the Obamas, singing What’d I Say. (Link to the full show) [8:06] Here’s the Hey Jude finale of the Paul McCartney In Performance show. (This full-length video is an enhanced “whole show”, containing the whole White House show and some additional Gershwin Prize footage.)
