Food sales

Inflation has been happening for everyone for quite a while. Though it has hit nearly all costs for both products and services, it manifests most directly in grocery prices, as well as gas prices. Everyone can see a week to week increase, and memories of previous year’s prices are still fresh.

There are people who purchase the same food every shopping trip; variety is not an option. But most shoppers are aware of sales, and buy according to what is adequate but lower in price. This can be from grocery ads and/or coupons.

So what drives sales?

Loss leaders. Selling one product at less than cost to attract buyers to a particular store.

Vendor discounts. Rebates from the producers go to vendors and then to the individual stores.

Seasonal discounts like eggnog at Christmas,

Excess of a particular product or food.

Nearing expiration dates. Those might be routed to somewhere like Grocery Outlet.

Attempting to gain market share or improve brand image.

Over-ordering by mistake.

Competition with other stores in the area.

We absolutely plan our meals from the weekly grocery circulars. We are privileged to have the time to shop at several stores, and we have two freezers as well such that we can store the bargains. We are as aware of inflation as much as anyone, but we do our best to mitigate it for our quotidian meal planning.

Then we go to restaurants and pay a fortune. Go figure!
