Neighborhood Ripples

I grew up in a growing suburban neighborhood, with most yards interconnected. Local kids played together, went to the same school, and our parents mostly had similar jobs and attended similar churches. After college we moved several times across the country, never long in the same location. We met few neighbors since we were concentrating on careers.

Moving to our farm we were stable for 40+ years, but socialized mostly with old friends. We knew our neighbors, but the neighborhood connections occurred mostly on Fridays, when everyone took their garbage cans out to the road simultaneously, and we all would touch bases.

We moved to our condo knowing no-one in the neighborhood. It was our political activism that introduced us to folks in the area, especially our post carding group who have become close friends, engendering even more connections. Overall our present circle is quite large.

The condo neighborhood has been fascinating, since we live in such a dense arrangement. Some have become close, with sharing and socializing. And then there’s those who are, well, strange. Some are loquacious beyond normality. And often from them one hears the same stories, again and again. We have many different ethnicities, so many accents. We have sullen loners. We have those with obvious mental problems. All told, it’s a marvelous circle, and at least for me, I’d be loath to change any of it.
