Print Media Everyone is aware of the decline of newspapers. From 2005 to 2021, about 2,200 American local print newspapers closed.[14] From 2008 to 2020, the number of American newspaper journalists fell by more than half. It’s pretty clear that the rise of the internet has been the main factor. Many folks get their news on line, as well as from TV, though the latter is declining. While television is still a major source for older Americans, younger audiences increasingly prefer getting news online, especially through social media and streaming services. We have been subscribers to our local paper, the Press Democrat, for at least 50 years, and have watched its decline. Classifieds were an important source and a major financial element. The Sunday issue is half the size of the old daily. What remains is important: local news and advertising, and the ability to take local politicians and other wrongdoers to task. On a personal level I enjoy reading the paper in bed with a nearby cup of coffee. And with a scissors nearby as well, to save important information. Yes, one can do this on line as well but the physical presence of an article ensures that it might be noticed and remembered. How often does one peruse one’s bookmarks? And what do folks do for lining the table when preparing vegetables, or starting the fire in the wood stove? We’ll be keeping our newspaper subscription as long as possible. Does anyone here have a print newspaper subscription?
