I couldn’t remember details, but I did a Google search and discovered they were books published by Bobbs-Merrill starting in the 1930s. The series was called Childhood of Famous Americans. In my memory the books were orange. The illustrations looked like black silhouettes. Some were assigned, but many of us read them for pleasure. We believed what we read in those days, and we didn’t have google to check details or even whether claims were factual. These books had a patriotic leaning, and of corse nowadays we know almost too much about the negatives in the lives of our heroes. My favorite was the biography of George Washington Carver. From wiki: George Washington Carver (c. 1864[1] – January 5, 1943) was an American agricultural scientist and inventor who promoted alternative crops to cotton and methods to prevent soil depletion.[2] He was one of the most prominent black scientists of the early 20th century. Carver’s biggest success came from peanuts. He however did not invent peanut butter.
