Who the fuck is asking for this!?! Many of us aren’t so happy about our first workplace. Surely not the other cogs commuting to work using the same roads as somebody engaged in an all-important work meeting …while depending on AI to keep them in their lane. Imagine if the AI decides Death Race 2000 is a better guide than say …the DMV handbook. “Can you avoid running over little kids today?” “Sorry Dave, I can’t do that. Your timely arrival is in the best interest of the stockholders.” Had to think a bit before realizing where the second workplace actually was …apparently it’s our homes. I wondered if it was where you did #2. Assuming as much because many years ago I was contracted to install many dozens of fancy bidet seats at a local tech company. How thoughtful of the boss to provide a cozy heated toilet seat that cleaned and dried you when doing your business. Then saw on the inside of the stall door …the “engineer’s puzzle of the week”. Nowhere a moment of peace. Even while trying to squeeze one out …the boss is trying squeeze every bit of productivity out of you. Worker productivity has been increasing since humans first invented tools. For many years (thanks to unions) the benefits were shared with the workers …those actually producing stuff. Then came Reagan and Family Ties. Everybody watched Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous as goals …a scale to measure happiness. The stuff money can buy is nice …hard to be happy without food and shelter. And work itself provides something …it feels good to accomplish something. At the end of the day a roofer can drive home knowing another family has shelter from the elements …or the waitperson serving a meal to a group out sharing an experience …nice. And money can buy time …can’t get that back. Corporations will forever be looking for ways to increase productivity …and profits. But putting our safety at risk using a hallucination prone technology just so we can join a work meeting? Seems a bit much. Besides the garbage in/garbage out characteristics of this technology. Think musk’s nazi-bot …not something I’d trust to get me to work safely. Just because you can doesn’t mean you should. The corporations would be happy to always be in your mind …day and night. Wringing out all it can. But we deserve to have our own time to use as we wish. To share with friends and family. To create experiences.
