[1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2025-05-20 The most basic definition of a sigil is, a symbol representing a person, thing, or concept. In our time the word is mainly used in reference to a symbol used in witchcraft. Sigils can be simple or extremely complex depending on who created it, what tradition of witchcraft, magic, or alchemy they practice, and how it's intended to be used. Sigils are useful in spellcraft, by representing something that may otherwise take a lot of space to write in full words. It's much easier to inscribe a candle for instance, where available space to write on is limited. A kind of magical shorthand. It's possible to use a sigil created by someone else, have a sigil custom made, or create your own. There are many ways to do this; I prefer creating my own sigils, and today I'll share the method I worked out for myself years ago. I'm told it resembles the method used in chaos magic though not precisely the same. The sigil I use most often is the one I sign my artwork with. It's made of the first initials of my first and last names, and resembles a horned animal. When creating a sigil made up of letters, I first condense a phrase to just one or two words. Then I remove the vowels; any consonants that repeat are used just once. Very often I draw it so that vertical lines appear only once or twice, and are shared by other letters having vertical lines. The same with horizontal lines. Curved lines are also shared when possible. Doing this, a word like "Health" will be represented using H, L, and T. Two possible versions I came up with, using H, L, and T. My preference is to use upper case letters and a fairly simple style. I write the letters separately at first, and then play with the arrangement, keeping in mind my purpose for creating the sigil. Eventually a pattern emerges that I find pleasing. By overlapping the letters a picture of sorts will appear. It doesn't have to be perfectly symmetrical but you should find it attractive to look at and easy to recreate on various surfaces. A long word like "Happiness" might be substituted with a shorter synonym like "Joy". Sample sigil for "Joy" composed of J and Y. With numbers the process is pretty much the same. Repeated numbers are represented once. The most recent sigil I created uses the numbers 4, 6, 7, and 8. First I combined the curves of 6 and 8. Then the vertical lines of 4 and 7. After that I doodled around with combining them all. Until I came up with something I liked. This sigil will be added to my future protest signs. I'm making it freely available to others if they want to use it. They can't arrest us all. ••• Stay tuned. ••••••• Thank you for reading. This is an open thread, all topics are welcome.
