When Garbage Strikes [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2025-01-20 Martin Luther King was assassinated in Memphis after delivering one of his greatest speeches in support of striking garbage workers there. The strikers carried signs that read “I AM A MAN,” referencing the treatment of Black citizens as second-class persons without civil rights, which was a small step up from their past status as property. Today is just a coincidental intersection of a national holiday and a date set by the 20th Amendment. However, the pay-to-play (and pay-to-”worship”) excesses of the moneyed elite is an insult to a holiday honoring a man who fought the entitled elite’s subjugation of a whole class of people.
