So when I sit to write each week my first act is to see if I’ve written before on whatever date it is. As it turns out, I’ve only been at the helm on December 30th twice prior. The first was in 2008, my very first year on Team Top Comments, and the other was in 2017. What wise words did I have back then? Let’s see [cue swirly psychedelic image and ethereal music]… In 2017, we were in the first year of 45’s term. And yeah, it was as bad as we’d all feared. But I considered the question a friend had posed: Did anyone have a good 2017? Tell me about it please. And in true brillig fashion, I first wanted to say no, I didn’t have a good 2017… until I thought about it and realized that indeed I had. Here’s what I said then: Did anyone have a good 2017? Yes. I did. And I believe we MUST look for moments of good, for those areas of peace and contentment in our lives, or risk forgetting what it is we fight for each and every day. I hope that when you take a look, YOU had a good year too. And if not, that you’ll see a better one next year. In 2008, after musing about the year just about gone, I said: I don't make New Year's Resolutions, not really. Oh, if with friends I'll mumble something about getting to the gym more or some such thing. I've always been an "I don't know what the year holds so why make plans" kind of girl. But then I penned the kind of resolution I have no recollection of saying but hit me square in the feels: I Resolve To Meet The New Year Head-on. Unafraid of the future, knowing that with the support of those around me I can and will rise to meet all challenges. Generous in heart and mind, trusting myself and others. Mindful of all I have learned in 2008, and with an eye toward preparing a better 2010. I still don’t do resolutions, and when I’ve been at the helm on December 31st I often use that as a starting point. But that year, knowing we’d be adopting a child in 2009, I must have felt like I needed to make a resolution. I know many of us are ending 2024 with the shadow of the incoming Administration change looming. I certainly am. But as I looked back at two very different December 30ths, I realized those words are what I need to take into 2025… I Resolve To Meet The New Year Head-on. Unafraid of the future, knowing that with the support of those around me I can and will rise to meet all challenges. I believe we MUST look for moments of good, for those areas of peace and contentment in our lives, or risk forgetting what it is we fight for each and every day. I’ll spend tomorrow wrapping up some charitable donations and readying the house for K1 and partner to come over to play board games and usher in 2025. Perhaps K2 will join us… he is 19 and spending New Year’s Eve with your family may not be his cup of tea. I’ve promised to have shrimp and homemade cocktail sauce ready, just like last year, and we’ve got enough Fancy Cheese That You Get At The Holidays to feed us all evening! Hopefully we’ll make it to midnight, but if we don’t, that’s OK too. We’ll be ending the old year and welcoming the new with family and what could be better. What’s on your agenda for tomorrow? Tell us about it in the comments!
